dmd77 – another thoughtful dog owner! I think part of it is the whole New York thing (everyone is SO busy and can’t yield because then they won’t get where they’re going!) which I have a real love/hate relationship with. I never mind when dogs sniff me or jump up (as long as I’m not dressed for work with stockings and everything). I wish I ran near sabapup and dmd-dog!
@Classof2015 – yes, I try to pull him over, but I also get the clueless people who directly approach my dogs (while staring at them) or who allow their own dogs to approach mine. In general, and yes, I am probably exaggerating here, it’s the small-dog owners who have the worst behaved dogs. The only time I’ve ever been bitten, it was a shih-tzu on a 15-foot flexi with an owner screaming “don’t worry, he’s friendly.” Yeah, that was just a friendly tear in my sock. (The flexi leash is the work of the devil.)
Edited to add: in my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with asking a dog owner “am I safe to run past your dog?” if you have any question about it. Where I run, there are an astonishing number of people who have their dogs off-leash (and I’m running with mine on a six-foot leash). I always stop, put my hand under my dog’s muzzle, and say “could you call your dog, please, mine worries”–which usually shames them into putting their dog on leash until I’m out of sight.
Wow – I would be a little scared by a lot of dogs off leash. How do they know you’re not playing “tag”?
There are people in my neighborhood who have their dogs off leashes when walking. Generally they are good dogs. Usually old dogs! BUT…why risk it? A dog or car or voice or noise - or anything - could spook them. Why put any dog or human at risk for getting off course?
I hit a dog once with my car - it was a top awful day in my life. Gate had been left open in his yard - apparently not the first time. He appeared out of no where from behind some bushes and ran directly toward my bumper and under the car. He didn’t live.
I cried for days.
(sorry to get off topic…)
Been attacked several times by unleashed dogs and we ran over one that ran out in the street from a gate left opened too. Both scary and sad. The chow dog next door got out and attacked my dog - that was in our yard, so many times, I finally threatened lawsuit, they moved. The owner was the principal of a high school, so it’s not like he’s a total ignoreamous. I just don’t get some dog owners.
No stupid dogs - just stupid people.
I have to agree with dmd on small dogs - the only trouble I’ve ever had has been with small dogs, usually off leash. And don’t get me started on retractable leashes. People are stupid.
Glad you’re feeling better, SalveMater - sometimes rest is exactly what’s needed.
Last night I subbed for H and worked out with the trainer at the gym instead of running. H is out of town and we’ve paid for the sessions, so need to use them. A good workout and my abs are sore today, but this is going to be a really low mileage week for me.
There are lots of dogs on the multi-use trail that I run on all the time. Retractable leashes are terrible. H gets irate at people who let their dogs be off leash but usually we see that either in remote sections of the trail where there are rarely many people or in some of the parks that aren’t very crowded. I know it really bugs him, but personally I think it’s really nice that these dogs have an opportunity to run free on occasion. We have a huge 2 acre yard that our dog can run around in to his heart’s content, but I always feel bad for dogs that live in apartments or in places with tiny yards where they don’t have a chance to run around freely. I’m fine with an unleashed dog supervised by a responsible owner in a lightly populated area. H is a black and white rules guy - the rules say dogs have to be on a leash, so they should always be on a leash. Sigh.
I actually have issues with my husband and how he handles our dogs. Our two Goldens are elderly and sweet, and can’t really “run”. We take them out in the front yard to potty and they might wander into the next yard or across the street while we are with them. There is almost no traffic. I don’t like having them off leash at ALL out of our yard- and I grab them if someone is going to come walking by- especially with another dog. One of our dogs is huge- and some people are afraid of big dogs- and some other dogs aren’t thrilled with him! I don’t expect everyone to know that he’s 13 and very gentle. My husband thinks it is fine to let him mosey around off leash. We have a back yard but neither dog can handle the steps to get there from the back deck and they don’t seem that thrilled to walk around the house to get there.
A new study:
One weekly serving of red meat? No bacon?
I’m in trouble. ![]()
I would not have pegged salt as the biggest culprit.

No bacon??? That’s crazy talk!
There’s a difference between having a slice of bacon or two and “gorging on bacon”!
So you don’t want to be that strict…how much of the bad vs. good are you eating now? Can you find ways to eat LESS bad and MORE good?
Regarding meat…
1-2 meatless day
2 chicken days
1 fish day
1 day lean pork
That’s 5 or 6 days…is that do-able?
Every weekend I enjoy a thick slice of bacon. One whole slice. Sometimes a whole slice both weekend days. I’ll slap your hand if you try and take it away from me!
30 minute run after work.
Lean pork chops and asparagus and some scalloped potatoes for dinner.
I do 1400 mg of sodium a day. Red meat a couple times a month (I don’t do burgers – just steak), lots of chicken, fish, seafood. Occasional pork. No sugared soda. No added butter/margarine. Nuts are a trigger food – I would eat half a pound in one sitting.
Swim and fitness class. I ended up grouped with the men, which I took as a challenge.
I don’t drink soda and I eat a lot of fruit, veggies and chicken. But I love steak and eat it about once/week. My iron tends to run at the very low end of normal and I think that’s why I crave it.
I really have to be mindful of sugar with my sweet tooth.
I’ve been a total eating fail this week - one of the drawbacks of not shopping/prepping on the weekend and being super busy at work and just too tired to get to the store in the evening. I can’t imagine not eating bacon - I love this peppered bacon from Niman Ranch and there is no way I’m giving that up too. Chik-fil-A was hard enough! I also eat red meat more than once a week - I buy a tenderloin at Costco and slice it into steaks and a roast - it is a quick meal if I remember to take it out of the freezer!
Pup walk this morning, Barre class this afternoon.
3 1/2 miles. My legs felt dead. After I’ve been away from the treadmill for a few days and get back on, it takes something out of my legs. I was outside this morning, but yesterday was treadmill. It was clear and cool, though. Hard to get out of bed…
Last night was a 3.5 mile run with the running club. A new guy came and he is fast so I was able to run at a faster pace than usual. Unfortunately no opportunity for exercise today besides getting my steps in because of a late meeting at work and commitment in the evening. Some days are like that.
MOWC - I have always thought that running on the treadmill make my legs more tired as compared to the same distance running outside. I figured it was my imagination, but it’s nice to know you feel the same way.
I have red meat at least once, and sometimes twice a week. I do love a good burger. Especially when grilled outdoors, and super especially when it is topped with a home-grown tomato. Can’t wait for summer to get here!
Went to my first Healthy U Champion meeting at work today - got my 1/4 zip so I’m legit!
Was interesting to see the other champions - there are 34 of us. A wide range of ages, occupations, body sizes and shapes - but true to form like this thread, everyone seemed to have a commonality of having a degree of dedication to wellness - be it eating, fitness or preventative health (like doc visits, screenings, etc.)
Bonus: got close to 2000 extra steps just walking to and back from the meeting!
Looking forward to participating in some of the spring events.
C3B- I think it’s because it is so much repetitive motion. I vary my pace, but am not great about adding treadmill incline since I get enough of it outside. Even with varying pace, it’s still a lot of the same motion from your legs.
4 miles.
H starts the low fiber diet today. Once again he’s convinced there’s NOTHING he can eat – which isn’t true at all. The big C, round 2, is on Monday, so no food for the weekend. Heck of a way to lose weight.
I saw the announcement about the new Fitbit Alta yesterday – of course it comes out just after I buy a Charge 2. I most likely would have gone for the new Alta, especially since they changed the clasp to a buckle. Oh well, I’m pretty happy with the Charge 2.
