For me MFP shows a calorie burn of 105 for a 7.5 mile pace while the Garmin 235 gives me 80 calories.
6 this morning, with bursts of faster running for 4 streetlamps (about 4 blocks). Felt good to be mixing up the pace.
^^I like the street lamp count.
The tricks we play …two more fire hydrants, burst for 6 houses worth of distance…
haha yes, abasket – you got it!
sabaray is my mid-week mid-distance run hero! Good workout Classof2015!
I go in and out of very short little cul de sacs which my daughter thinks is crazy. But 1/10th here and 1/10th there adds up!
Thanks MOWC! No races til end of April so this helps keep it interesting. Every bit does count – cul de sacs and extra loops.
Sabaray – yes sounds like you deserve some rest. Sorry for the poor sleep – that’s something that plagues me more and more.
MOfWC, that is so cool about your co’s new hire and your co’s participating in corporate challenges!
Re: little goals while exercising. I too set them. Maybe I can do one more push-up. Maybe I can wall-sit for a few seconds longer. Maybe I can walk faster and make it on the earlier bus. Someday I will be lamp-counting, too.
No exercise yesterday, but I ended up just over 20K steps. Tonight is a session at the gym with my trainer. Normally H and I train with him one after the other on Thursday nights, but H is headed to Illinois after work. His brother is having open heart surgery tomorrow morning for a double bypass. This came up unexpectedly and H is a mess. His brother has horrible eating habits, never ever exercises, and is not compliant with his diabetes medications. I hope that this will push him to make positive life changes but I doubt it. My FIL has had heart issues for many years and now with BIL having problems, H is sure that he is next. I try to tell him that genetics isn’t everything and that his lifestyle is completely different from his father’s and brother’s but right now he can’t think straight.
And Friday night our kids and their SOs come into town to go over and celebrate FIL’s 85th birthday! It was planned long ago and flights are non-refundable so everything is still a go. It will be good for the family to get together, regardless of the circumstances.
MOWC - enjoy the game tonight. I know you wanted more mileage but there’s always tomorrow!
sabaray - great job on going the distance this cold morning!
I hope your BIL’s surgery goes well, C3Baker. Lifestyle is certainly a big part of good health! My father led an unhealthy lifestyle for many years - then decided to quit smoking and returned to exercising regularly, lifting weights, walking and running. While he struggled with his weight and did develop diabetes, the fact that he exercised was a real plus. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with cancer and while in the hospital post-surgery he developed some complications and it was discovered he needed a triple bypass immediately. Dad’s doctors and surgeons all told him many times over that the positive lifestyle changes he had made enabled him to survive a potentially fatal heart episode - so tell your husband that!
I do have a race coming up next weekend and I’m not sure what I should do for mileage this weekend. It’s ten miles - do you think 8 is sufficient? The plan I’ve been loosely following has 8 on the schedule and I’m wondering if that’s enough.
I think 8 miles is perfect this weekend in preparation for a 10 mile race next weekend.
Thanks for the story about your father, sabaray! I’m glad to hear that his positive lifestyle changes made a difference for him.
It’s interesting how much variance there is between devices.
My phone has a step counter built in, and the Fitbit Charge 2 can sync with my phone’s GPS to track distance.
So I ran an experiment, using both the Fitbit and the Map My Hike app on my phone, to track a walk.
Fitbit: 2.64 miles, 657 calories, 5425 steps
MMH: 2.4 miles, 399 calories, 6431 steps
That’s a 10% difference in distance, using the same GPS! Don’t know why there would be such a large discrepency for steps either. The MMH numbers give me a stride length of just under 2 feet, which seems pretty short. The Fitbit gives me a stride length of 2.6 feet, which seems more reasonable.
I’ll have to run this experiment a few more times.
Yesterday a rare elliptical workout. I wanted to chat with a friend I hadn’t seen in awhile and she can’t run so we did that. Today a swim and the gym workout. I pushed the pace on the swim which made my coach happy. Despite being built like a sprinter (big muscles), I am not one. I can swim for hours at a moderate rate, but don’t ask me to sprint. The gym workout was mixed. There is a move I can do well and sustain that four weeks ago I couldn’t even do (!) because I couldn’t get my brain to activate those muscles. But because I focused on that move, I missed out on some other ones.
About comparing devices. I had a Timex GPS in the early 2000s. I loved it. That thing was indestructible. I don’t know how many times I accidentally washed the pod unit I had to wear on my arm. It would still work. My friend had a Nike pedometer-style device. We used to run together, then at the end stop and discuss ( sometimes argue) about which reading was correct. They were never quite the same.
I had that Timex arm pod watch, too! I thought it took forever to latch onto the GPS! I also didn’t like the arm unit. It was a beefy device, though!
Sabaray- 4 is more than enough. Remember- you can race twice as far as you train. You’ll be good with an 8 mile easy-paced run this weekend.
notrichenough – I owned a Fitbit Charge and did several experiments with it comparing it to other step and mileage counters (mentioned these on this forum a few times). For me, the Fitbit was always off. Sometimes as much as 30%. When I tried a Garmin, it was off by 50%!
I took a long walk outside today – sunny and windy. Tomorrow the weather changes so it’ll be indoor activities for a few days.
45 minutes on the Arc + 6 minutes on the Octane Lateral. (Increasing the latter a little at a time.)
I’ve used the LoseIt App in the past. I helped remind me about portion sizes, which is key for me. I have the same breakfast almost every morning, so I know exactly how many calories I’m eating. (And, no, I never get tired of it!)
So get this – H totally messed up, and his re-do colonoscopy isn’t until APRIL 13. Not to bore you with all the details, but when he made the appointment last week (the day after his initial procedure), he got off the phone and said April 13. I put it on my calendar and even texted D that we could have lunch again. A little while later H mentioned that he wouldn’t be able to eat next weekend, meaning this weekend coming up. I asked him why and he got all ticked off and said, “Because of the colonoscopy.” I said I thought it was April 13; he was still ticked off and said, “No, March 13.” In retrospect, I think he was still dealing with a little “fuzzy brain” from the anesthesia. Plus, he has to do the low fiber diet for 7 days before the procedure, not the 3 he did for the first one. It’s not all that hard – basically you just eat somewhat unhealthily, i.e. white bread, almost no fruit or vegetables, etc.
Geez. Well, at least this weekend will be normal!
@ohiopublic, yes , I have compared both readouts in my Garmin 820 (kilojoules and calories). Generally, the straight calorie readout on the 820 is a bit higher the the kilojoules readout but not drastically so. Maybe 100- 159 calories across a 4 hr ride.
I had water for lunch for the fourth day in a row! I don’t think I’ve made it that far at all this school year. I also did a 6 mile run outside. I haven’t been able to do my usual route since about September because of construction (they are building two major shopping centers about a mile from where I live
). It was so nice, even though there were a few small parts that were blocked off and I ran it so much slower than I would have liked. I’m just sad because this route is going to be awful whenever the places actually open. It’s a nice little 3 mile route, but there’s going to be so much traffic soon! Oh well, I’ll enjoy it while I can.
I’m starting to get very nervous about my races in April. On the first I have a 10k, then a half on the 22, and then a 10k on the 31st. I did not expect to still feel this out of it this late in the training. Eek!
Wow CBBBlinker! Did he start on the prep or it was all to happen this weekend? It’s like studying for the SAT then it’s cancelled!
Interested to hear what your “go to” breakfast is. Oatmeal? Eggs? Fruit?
Poor CCB’s husband!
@nahnah12 great job on the water - keep it up and soon it will be a habit!
(I think) We all get nervous about races. When it comes down to it, make simple goals in your head to get your started off good at the starting line and hopefully you’ll feel good and then make the race successful - and successful is what you need to define and accept.
