I’ve read a little about the Seattle woman. As I get older I do start to think more and more about when and where I’m running (all those SVU marathons I do probably don’t help…). I pretty much always run by myself, especially during the week. At some point last year I was talking to a guy around my complex (who always has his large dog with him), and he couldn’t understand why I didn’t want to run alone at night wearing headphones. (I also no longer run outside with music.)
Tonight I did a cycle class followed by a few upper body weight machines. I have a run tomorrow and I’m really wondering how it will go. Running used to help me relieve stress, now it seems like stress just messes with my running! I’m starting to get nervous- got a call for an interview for what seems like a really “good fit” school on Monday! I’ll have a lot to think about during my long run this weekend!
I agree that not running alone is not an option for me. I get some flack on Facebook about it. I generally feel pretty confident- especially early in the morning. I was a tiny bit nervous in Napa on that trail just because it was pretty isolated and unfamiliar to me. Normally there aren’t too many bad guys out at 6 am, though. I felt more confident when I was faster and more aggressive of a runner. Now- I am more obviously female- and certainly slower.
And certainly with regard to one point raised in the article you posted, that concerning the clothing, who seems to be more fixated on clothing and fashion??? If you judge by this Board… (Ok, I know I’m in trouble now.)
I had read about the Seattle woman too – they showed her Instagram post with her GPS tracking - -the red lines zigzagging in the same spot when she was attacked - that was chilling. I feel safe running in the park (even though the bathrooms aren’t open when I run) but when I was doing long runs after Labor Day, I was often the only person on the road going past all these closed up summer homes. Not a great feeling.
Not much running for me lately. Barely making it home by 8 pm because of a big work thing, which I thought would be done by now. Constant frustration. I feel like I’m living that Billy Idol song: “talkin’ to my self”. No one reads emails. Or follows instructions. Vent over.
Happy Thursday everyone! Glad Mr. B has a plan to address the hip issues, C3B.
I’m not a hotel snob, but this place needs to be leveled and started over!
4.5 miles on the sea wall. Lots of noisy sea birds, part of a sunrise, and wind in my face on the way out. Holy humidity. That should do it for Corpus Christi running for awhile. Question of the day is: Does Whataburger serve breakfast? When in Rome…and as awful as this hotel is, I’m not inclined to try the restaurant.
I’ve been reading Meb for Mortals. Short and full of good advice. I must say that I’m comforted by his mentioning no that he’s struggled to keep his weight down as he’s gotten older. I also liked “which do you want more, the donut or the win?”
New weight loss talk at work: Apple cider vinegar, grapefruit juice, orange juice and honey drink. Put lots of honey in it to cut the strong taste of the vinegar and bitterness of the grapefruit.
Because if you add LOTS of honey, it’s sure to keep your calorie count down.
I love Meb for Mortals - D got it for me when it first came out and it’s been a great resource for me. The emphasis on cross-training and injury prevention is really helpful.
That drink sounds disgusting, abasket. How in the world would that help with weight loss?
Slow 3 treadmill miles this morning. It was cold and Mr. Sabaray was worried about refreezing so off to the gym I went. There’s a peripheral member of our running group who is really stressing me out and of course she was bending my ear about some perceived slight this morning. I really don’t want to run with her because of her negative attitude - she has more problems than any of us can help with during a run. She needs a therapist more than she needs running partners - and I say that as someone who has both!
7 minutes on the Lateral Trainer + 45 minutes on the Arc. Honestly thought today was a holiday nobody told me about – the gym was almost completely empty when I got there at my usual time.
Requesting all manner of prayers, positive thoughts, good karma, etc. for my brother. He’s having surgery tomorrow for bladder cancer. I’ll be driving to the hospital in NH early in the morning to keep my SIL company during the 6 - 8 hour ordeal.
As a (related) side note – SIL and I have been talking a lot over the last several weeks since B’s diagnosis. I knew he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 15 years ago, and knew he was taking meds for that. But he’s had it under control, isn’t overweight, exercises some, etc. (My research tells me there could be a link between those meds and the cancer, though.) BUT, SIL also told me B was also taking meds for high blood pressure and cholesterol, which I knew nothing about. She said,“But that’s fairly typical; aren’t you and your H taking anything?” I said, “No, neither one of us take anything. I take calcium & Vitamin D, but that’s it.” She was shocked! Another incentive to keep me going to the gym!
That drink sounds like a mashup of the folk tale that ACV causes weight loss and the oh-so-faddish yet ineffective grapefruit diet, with orange juice and honey added so you don’t gag on it.
Meb is just an awesome person. Years ago my son literally ran across him running in Central Park. Meb said “Hi. I’m Meb.” My son said , “Yeah. I know who you are!” They ran together a little ways. I was jealous.
Eww- that drink.
I didn’t mention how horrible my run felt this morning. I was trying to enjoy the change of scenery and climate but all I could think of was how tired my legs were and how miserable I felt!
Everyone is looking for the magic weight loss potion - literally- in the form of a drink, shake or pill. When the answer is directly in front of them - their mind, body and particularly their mouth - and what goes in it!!!
CBBBlinker - I will certainly be thinking of your brother tomorrow. I hope his surgery is successful with a favorable prognosis. Cancer is terrifying. It’s very kind of you to travel and keep your SIL company during the surgery. Please keep us posted on how things go tomorrow.
sabaray - Ewww, Ick! Running on the treadmill is bad enough, having to endure a complainer talking your ear off during the run sounds tortuous! I hope you can keep your distance from her during the group runs.
MOWC - this sounds like a pretty lousy trip for you all the way around! I hope your legs are feeling better now. You never really give them any kind of a break, no wonder they are tired!
Meb just seems like someone who’d be great to run with. Positive attitude even in the worst of times. I think back to those pushups at the finish all the time - good visual to carry in my head.
I wouldn’t like that Texas weather - I’d have a hard time switching gears between weather extremes from TN to TX!
No, negative people are not fun to run with and over time you build trust with your running partners. One of the issues is that she doesn’t run consistently, so on long runs she can’t keep up with the group(s) and then complains about being left behind. I used to feel badly for her but now I’m just irritated. Put the work in consistently if you want to run with us, you can’t just show up on the weekend. I know that sounds mean but I just don’t want to deal with it.
CBBBlinker – thoughts and prayers with your brother. Cancer is so scary, but there are so many advances every day I hope he has a good surgery and recovery.
I met Meb (me and thousands of other people) before the marathon last fall. Nice nice guy. Stood for photos with everyone.
I tried drinking apple cider vinegar in warm water once. Sick-making.
CBB, sending good thoughts to you and your family as your brother goes through surgery. My father had bladder cancer but he was able to take care of it with the surgery alone. <3
