Nice 3.5 mile run after work! Cloudy and 60. Dressed too warm. Need to drop the long sleeve shirt!!

This weekend I’m doing the Shamrock Shuffle 8k in Chicago. I’ve said I would do it for a couple years, this is the year it gets done. Running with a friend who lives in the suburbs. We’re in the same corral…this will be my biggest race EVER in terms of the # of people - I think it’s something ridiculous like close to 40K! Any tips for that big a race - I guess I can’t get lost in the race because there should always be people around you!!!

Can’t wait to hear the race report, @abasket!

Welcome to our new folks - always glad to see lurkers join in! Just back from walking the pups - who need to be walked no matter what - was not feeling great so came home at lunchtime and slept the afternoon away. Haven’t been sick in a long time so hopefully I can fight this off.

Boo, sabaray. I hope you are OK!

abasket- If they start the corrals individually, it will feel just like any other race. Otherwise, you will feel like you are in a big parade. Don’t worry about your time. Sounds like fun!

2.5 more miles after work on my treadmill. I felt better than I expected for being so tired from the travel yesterday and the 2 pounds I gained from pounding down everything I could eat or drink for 5 days!

Gosh if this weather (here in northern CT) doesn’t turn soon I’m going to self destruct. Went on outdoor runs Sat/Sun (one with the pup), the first in at least 6 weeks, I’d say. 42° and drizzly actually felt warm (ish)! Now it’s back to winter again. This is the winter that won’t end, and it’s really wearing on me.

End rant. Thanks for listening.

I guess the good thing is that we adopted a treadmill in the fall…So that’s gotten plenty of use-and also I’ve gotten back to some weight training, if only my shoulder will hold up.

Sabaray I’m glad you got to nap but I’m sorry you’ve got the yuck. ALMOST made it through the worst part of the year! I hope you see some decently quick relief.

I am not going to worry about time. Really. I just want to enjoy running through the city, the people, etc. My friend has done this race yearly for years so I’m thrilled to not have to worry about parking, line up, etc. - she’s a pro and will be picking my race packet up for me on Friday since I can’t get there until Saturday morning (race is Sunday).

abasket- Wow, that sounds huge! I’m doing a 10k this weekend and I think it has a little less than 30k people. The one I’m doing has corrals starting ~2 minutes apart. It is supposed to be strictly enforced (you can drop back but you can’t move up), but I saw a lot of people in corrals faster than they should have been in. I think if you’re a faster person it’s fine, but I’m a slower runner who still wants to do my best. It can be frustrating when people are straight up walking and won’t move (have NOTHING against people who walk it, but there are corrals for that). I’m already going to be slower than I want, so I hope I don’t have that added frustration. My main goal is to just enjoy it!

Sabaray- I feel like this is the year everyone is getting sick. I have seen a ton of people get sick who are rarely out. It’s getting a bit crazy!!

I had a good 4 mile run at the gym today. I really wanted to run outside since it was so nice, but my sunburn hurts. A lot. I even got to visit our school nurse twice today to put stuff on it! Hoping it’s pain free by Saturday.

Good luck with your race Abasket. Feel better Sabaray.

Decided to make today my rest day for the week. Slow flow yoga tomorrow morning.

I had a good 5 mile run after work last night. Thank goodness it is staying light longer so I can still get a run in even when I get home later than usual. I am hoping to be able to leave early enough tonight to make it to running club.

abasket - enjoy the race this weekend! I love big races, just all the excitement in the air and everyone being so pumped for a good run. I know a lot of people don’t like the crowds, but I think it’s fun. I’m glad you’re doing it with a friend who knows the ropes, especially parking and such. Have a fun weekend!

busdriver - thanks for the info on melatonin. I think I may give it a try. I have been using Advil PM WAY too much lately and would be better off with something more natural.

sabaray - sorry to hear you’re feeling crummy. I hope you slept it off yesterday afternoon and are doing better today.

Welcome to the newcomers. This is a great group for motivation and the experts have so much helpful advice to offer. Stick with us, you’ll be glad you did!

That’s good, C3Baker! Good after work run. Somehow I always feel too tired after work but I should try it instead of getting up at 6 to run before work. Got 6 miles in. Cool and damp but no rain.

abasket – that is a big race! With the corrals you should be fine. I find my only issue with a race like that is avoiding the other runners swinging elbows. I’m short so they seem to be aiming for my nose

sabaray – hope you feel better. This weather doesn’t help (cold one day, warm the next).

Justamom – I totally get you. I wish winter proceeded in a more predictable, conventional fashion. A few weeks where it snows, then a lessening of snow, then some warming weather, snow melts, crocuses pop, and you know you can ditch the heavy coat and gloves. Not this bipolar weather system we’ve been having.

Almost always a PR when you run an 8k! Bonus!

Good luck abasket!

Thanks all. Still not 100% but I’m going to live. Trying another new recipe, this time from “Run Fast, East Slow” - the flu-fighter chicken and rice stew. Throw all of this in your crockpot: 1 tbsp olive oil, 5 sliced carrots, 1 chopped yellow onion, eight cloves of garlic, minced; 2 tbsp minced ginger; 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes; 1 lb of boneless chicken breasts and thighs, mixed; 1 cup short grain brown rice and 6 cups of chicken broth. Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours. Add 3 cups of packed spinach, 1 cup of parsley, chopped and 1 tbsp of lemon juice right before serving. Optional topping of shredded Parmesan. I hope it’s good but I’m not even hungry. The recipes in this book are very simple, for the most part and unlike other “athletic performance” cookbooks are things I actually want to eat.

The garlic and the ginger - those are your cold-fighting items in your recipe! Let us know how it turns out. Sounds like enough to feed an army - hope you get hungry!

Evidently parsley does as well! I have been drinking a lot of turmeric/ginger tea. I also wanted to mention for folks having difficulty sleeping, the Yogi brand Kava Stress Relief tea about 30 minutes before bed is a nice way to relax.

^I will check out that tea – thanks! I’ve been having a mug of sleepytime tea. Glad to mix it up.

The soup sounds great. When I’m really congested, I find a few drops of Tabasco in chicken soup really helps open my sinuses.

Sabaray, hope the chicken dish does its magic! Mr. B got a nasty cold last week, but thank goodness he is recovering rather quickly. The chicken soup I made for him definitely helped. And miraculously he has not passed the bug to me!

I have always added Frank’s hot sauce to my chicken soup - can’t eat the soup without it!

Just because I’m curious…what is it in the “sleepytime” teas or the Yogi teas that aid with relaxation??? Is there catnip?? Just kidding on that…but I’m really curious what the natural component is that aids with sleep.

The tea I mentioned uses kava as it’s primary therapeutic ingredient.

For me, just looking at the sleepy bear on the box makes me feel sleepy. But I googled Sleepytime and got this: “comforting aroma and perfectly balanced flavor from a blend of soothing herbs, including delicate chamomile, cool spearmint and fresh lemongrass.”

sabaray- that chicken stew sounds great. My daughter has made a lot of things from that cookbook.

Also, sabaray- Do you ever feel a little dehydrated on your morning runs? I do! I know I don’t drink enough in the evening, but I get up at least twice a night to pee anyway, and I’m not interested in getting up more! As a result, even though I gulp down a little water before I head out (I do better before weekend runs), I do think I am a little dehydrated.

3.2 miles this morning! Felt pretty good. We had some heavy rain last night which scares the big doggie (thunder fear).

I too get up at night - I’ve really been cutting down on my caffeine intake as I know that’s dehydrating. I’ve been drinking Nuun and Smartwater during the day. If I drink alcohol, I make myself drink an equal amount of water. I keep a bottle of water by my bedside because I will frequently wake up thirsty at night. I know I’m dehydrated in the mornings; I carry a handheld with me and try to sip from it consistently rather than gulping at a stop. I’ve been trying to eat vegetables that have a higher water content - I like spinach, celery, radishes, zucchini, tomatoes. I wish I could like Bunsen’s favorite watermelon more - I do like it in a salad with arugula and feta though.

I can’t drink the Sleepytime tea - I have an adverse reaction to chamomile - my throat gets very itchy.

I did go work out with my Pilates trainer this morning and actually felt better just getting the body moving. My doctor has recommended a full lab workup as the dehydration is a concern.
