Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Oh my BB, we need to get my H and your H together. Nothing makes him happier than putting in a french drain! For some reason digging makes him happy! I don’t envy you!

So I’m doubting the Fitbit being an HR now. Maybe they just changed the band to a regular watch clasp one? While I didn’t get my Alta charger to fit it at first, another attempt and it went on and is now charging. Once I get it charged (I figure then maybe I can somehow retrieve the serial number?) I’ll give Fitbit a call. I’d feel happy if I could give someone the delight of having their Fitbit pal back!

abasket, yes! The two of them would have a swell time. Mr. says yardwork makes him happy. I am so glad the new place is mostly NGPA!!! He can have at the little patch that we are allowed to touch.

ohio, I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. I know how difficult and painful your decision must have been.

Maiden voyage of my new cross bike today. Only 20 miles of road and gravel just to dial things in. Love the bike with the simplicity of a single chainring, the handling and of course the feel and effectiveness of hydraulic disk brakes. The saddle, eh, I’m not sure about yet. Tomorrow will be the real test - the Roubaix ride! Really looking forward to it. Hope my butt feels the same way after 56 miles on a new model of saddle.

@ohiopublic Very sorry to hear about the dog. That is so difficult!

Did 9 miles today. Next week will be my last “big” week, and I also happen to be on Spring Break so I hope these workouts go better than they have been. I just saw a posting from the half I’m doing on the 22 to show the elevation. I’m going to be wiped out after! I should be better at hills as pretty much all of my routes have them, but I guess I’ve been doing too much on the treadmill. I’m looking forward to some more outdoor runs now that we have warmer weather and more light.

I’m also thinking about doing the Galloway method for this half. Will practice on my 10 mile run next week. I know I won’t be able to run the whole thing, I’m just not there right now. I’m hoping this will help me not completely crash and burn!

Good luck, Michael. Sounds like a great bike. I hope your butt feels OK at the end of tomorrow’s ride!

Ohio, so very sorry about the pup. I hope your wife is okay today.

Nahnah, that looks like a really fun race. Like you, I live in a hilly area and one thing that has really helped on hills is focusing on maintaining an even effort. Sure, you’re going to slow down, but I’ve found it’s a lot easier to recover from that climb! Nice that the end of the course is mostly downhill. I think walk/run intervals are a great idea.

I’m sorry, Ohio. A dog is part of your family. a tough choice but sounds the only one at thus point.

Bromfield- that would put a damper on my whole post-yoga state of peaceful mind. Walking 4 miles when you have to is different from doing it because you want to. So strange it wouldn’t start for you.

Great job on the 5k dmd77! Being faster a year later is tough.

Way to go lizardly on the 10k!

Count in fiance for some manly projects. This is day 2 of ripping up the old deck; installing the new one. The local HD loves him.

Got my 2 1/2 hour run done, which yielded 14.1 miles. I wanted to go slower so my recovery would be better, but I didn’t. Nice morning, but even though it was a group training run, not many people showed up and I was by myself the whole way. No problem- I liked having the aid stations and doing a little different of a route. Glad it’s done! The last 4 miles were tough. It was hilly, but not like sabaray’s area or our big park. It went from 47 to 64 degrees while I was out there.

Way to go MOWC. 14 miles - whew!

Nice job, MOWC.

I really had (am having) a lot of self-doubt. The idea of doing what I just did was frightening (even though I’ve done it for years) and the thought of basically running twice that long for the actual race is not a happy one. I guess it will work out, but it sure is scary! I might be too old for this long stuff!

One of my young, fast friends ran Rotterdam today and did not have a good race. She was trying to break her PR of 3:05 and wound up with a 3:30. She claims she’s done with marathons. She puts a lot into her training, and it gets discouraging when the results elude you. I think it was too warm (she lives in MN).

Marathons are very daunting (ok I’ve only done one but it was humbling). I think you signed up for 2, MOWC. That’s a lot. I’d be beat after 14 miles. Good job!

Funny about Rotterdam - DD texted me this morning one of her friends she ran with in college did the Paris marathon in 3:19. I can’t imagine such a pace but she’s in her 20s and must have trained a lot.

Great job, MOfWC!

Sad about your friend. It is disheartening to shoot for a PR and then be so much off! Heat is a huge factor. My Kauai run was basically a survival run - I was off by good 20-25 minutes of what I could have gone for.

MOWC, I appreciate you writing that! I can identify right now. It’s funny, because I was supposed to do a six mile run on Thursday and it became a four mile run. The whole time I was debating dropping from the half to the 5k that will also take place. On Friday I was talking to someone who was on the marathon training team with me, and she told me she had signed up again. Even with this very not-great training cycle, I still want to sign up to do it again! (I’m trying really hard to make myself stick with the half instead. Even if everything was going really well, I just can’t fit marathon training in with work right now).

Starting in May, I want to start slowly adding in some speed work (haha). I’ll be asking for some advice about that soon! I want to start making some PR goals so I don’t always have the “just finish in an upright position” goal. It would be nice to start focusing on making progress.

(I also want to vent about wireless headphones. I’ve tried two pairs- one just wouldn’t stay in place and the second pair (the kind MOWC has) wouldn’t pair or turn on! I’m getting a replacement pair sent, but I’m running out of time before this half. Ahhh!)

Ugh. Sorry about the headphones! One thing I loved was that they worked so seamlessly. Occasionally I have to re-pair, or turn my iPod off and then on again.

Nahnah- I think you should stick with the longer race. Remember- you can race much farther than you train! You’ll be fine. It is scary, though. You can’t imagine that you can be faster and go that far.

I don’t have a good count of how many marathons I’ve done. I’ve been at it since 1978, with several multi-year stretches of none. I think I’m between 35 and 40. PR was Birmingham (old, hilly course) in 1982 or so with 3:08. I felt like I had a 3:05 in me on a better course, but it never happened. I ran Marine Corps as a bandit in 1983- tried to enter last minute but they wouldn’t let me. I quit a few, including another Birmingham (better course) where I only intended to do a 20 mile training run and my boyfriend at the time was doing the whole thing. I was winning for the women at 20 miles and his mother yelled “Honey, you can’t quit now. You’re WINNING!” Oh yes I could! :).

I bow to anyone who does a marathon.

It’s a beautiful day here. 75-77 and sunny with a breeze. I already done several hours of gardening. Then had to go to a local “meeting” for the Glass City Marathon which is in two weeks. I decided to volunteer this year. They do a full, half, relay, 5k and a kids run the day before. I’m helping with set up on Saturday and will be a course marshall (at about mile 2.5 12ish or 25ish depending how you look at it. on race day.

Walked away from the meeting with a 2016 dri fit I won in a raffle, a 2017 tshirt and then for the course marshall gig, a sleeveless neon yellow"staff" jacket. Cool except it says “ASK ME ?” on the back so I don’t know that I’ll be wearing that outside of the race!! Did turn down the free pizza, chips and cookies they had for everyone there. That pizza smelled GOOD. But I planned to run afterwards (it was at a beautiful metropark) so did not consume.

3 mile run at that park. It was packed with people. How is it that people DO NOT even thing about moving over when they see you coming and they are hogging the trail?!!! I don’t need much room but if I sprain my ankle going on the ground to get around you, I’ll be screaming at you!!!

The volunteering sounds like fun @abasket. Good for you walking away from the pizza and cookies though not sure if I would have made the same choice.

Meant to mention several pages back, what a kind and thoughtful person you are @Classof2015 . Sounds like your fiance and you found the right match.

I can’t imagine running 14 miles MOWC. That’s a lot!

I did however walk 11 miles this morning in training for my upcoming Avon 39. Skipped this afternoon’s yoga class to rest.

Nice haul, abasket!

FallGirl- I think walking 11 miles would be hard! Good job!

I couldn’t remember for sure so I looked up Avon 39, @FallGirl . What an organized effort - and, what effort for the participants! In case anyone doesn’t know what Avon 39 is…

"AVON 39 brings together women and men from around the country who are passionate about making a difference in their communities, and unites them under one goal – ending breast cancer. For anyone who is seeking a personal challenge and is inspired to give back, AVON 39 is for you.

Over two days, AVON 39ers walk 39.3 miles. Each walker also fundraises a minimum of $1,800 which is funneled by the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade to local and national organizations that help women and men, regardless of their ability to pay, get the breast cancer health care they need. These programs provide everything from language, food and transportation assistance, to financial help, and rely on the funds raised by AVON 39ers to keep making an incredible impact around the country. "

The fundraising minimum boggles my mind. Kudos to you FallGirl. Do you walk with others you know?? How big is your event (DC??)
