Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Hello to all. Off the grid for a couple of days … Wednesday I took the pup for an early 3 mile walk before her annual check-up with the vet, which had been rescheduled due to our being out of town on Monday to be with B. After that appointment I drive to the hospital in NH to visit him. He was SO much better than when I saw him on Sunday. He was still in ICU, and his arm is still swollen due to the blood clot – but he had a couple fewer tubes, his color was better, and bothhis heart rate and blood sugar had stabilized, He still had an NG tube down his nose, which he really hates. Hopefully that can come out soon. He may be transferred to s step-down unit today. The antibiotic seems to be working – it was possibly a MRSA infection. At any rate, things are headed in the right direction. Scary few days there, for sure.

Yesterday: 50 minutes on Cybex Arc. Today: 4 miles done.

My gym here in MA is $45.99/month. I’m able to freeze membership every year for the 6 months I’m at our beach house. (Although they do charge me $10/month for those 6 months.) This includes classes, although I’ve never taken any, I checked out several gyms around us when we loved here. Boston Sports Club was nice, but a little higher cost. The main thing there, with the nearest location to me, was lack of parking. An all women’s club is very close to me, but also much more expensive. I have no problem with a co-ed gym, so the $$ didn’t seem worth it. I also belong to a gym at the beach – $24.99/month with no classes. (But, since I don’t take classes …) I can also freeze my membership there (at no charge) for the 6 months we’re back in MA. So, less than $500 for the entire year. Both gyms have clean facilities and locker rooms. No pools, but it all works for me.

We have low cost community centers and they are pretty good, but not quite as good as the private clubs. I know a lot of people from my church use the community centers for water classes, jazzercise etc. We also have senior centers that offer some classes, but are geared toward seniors older than me.

Not to get into this again since I’m already in trouble for my opinions, but the thing that bothered me most about the United Air situation was that they kept calling Dr. Dao “elderly”. He’s 69! I’m about to be 65 and I don’t think I’m elderly! My husband and his bike friends are over 70 and bike 50-100 miles at a time a few times a week! Elderly? It made me stop to think about what is “elderly”? I’m not sure now.

MOfWC, I actually wrote a post about the same thing (came back to post it after class and saw that the thread was shut) - that is not even a full SS age, and I would be royally ticked off if I was working at 68, and someone called me “elderly.” Elderly is frail and barley moving, IMO.

CBBB, so glad things are looking better for your brother! I continue to think of him and pray for his complete recovery.

We have a community center that is basic, no frills, part of the city’s pool complex. I think it’s $35 a month but sanitation and cleanliness is an issue. I did not allow the children to swim there, much to their dismay.

One of my current running partners is in his late 60s, still working, invited me to join the “long distance” weekend group he’s a part of. Their short runs start at 14. He’d bristle at the suggestion he’s elderly. I like this article for perspective:

http://www.npr.org/2013/03/12/174124992/an-age-old-problem-who-is-elderly

Just finished a difficult mat class, but glad to have it done.

Good article, sabaray. I guess I would say 80, but that might be a moving target! Maybe 75.

“Elderly”. H turned sixty and he didn’t like Dr D being called elderly either. “Late middle aged”? “Older?” Sixty-eight is old enough to get some sort of special mention, even if not “elderly.”

Swam in a cool pool but moved fast enough I didn’t feel it.

Just found a water exercise class at the community pool near my house. Going to give it a shot. Class starts next week. Hope it’s not filled yet!

Interesting to read about various gym fees and options.

I went to Orange Theory on Wednesday, where I hurt my knee doing a side plank variation (knee down). I don’t know why it killed my knee, but it did. I decided to make yesterday a rest day. My knee felt much better today, so I joined a friend and we did a local Good Friday charity walk (raises money for a food pantry). Walk was 5 miles plus 1.5 mi. from my house to the start/back. My knee was fine for the walk. I’m going to be a chaperone for our church youth group–the kids are doing the Walk for Hunger (20 miles around Boston/Cambridge) in May. I think most of my exercise for the next few weeks is going to focus on longer walks.

MOWC: I hear you on the “elderly” term. I’m in my 60s and don’t in the least consider myself elderly.

I think a better term is “aged to perfection.”

@CountingDown - did you mean in that other thread post that your doggie crossed the rainbow bridge today? If so, I am so sorry.

I really don’t like the term “Senior Olympics”. When the national games were in Cleveland a local morning radio host was making snide remarks about them. The usual tired remarks about walkers needed, oxygen masks, Depends etc. I tried getting through to the station to challenge the DJ to any fitness contest of his choice but couldn’t get through.

People don’t realize how accomplished most of these athletes are. I know that I can equal my 8th grade times at 60 (non-sprint events.) I’m definitely in better shape than I was at 40 back in my “formerly old fat guy phase” (thanks for this term IDad wherever you are!)

Bunsen, yes. She got far more time than the vet expected, given the prognosis, and she was happy and comfortable til last weekend, when the tumor won out. She rallied a bit the last two days and spent time in the sun and eating well, but her breathing was stressed and problematic and we did not want her to suffer. Vet was amazing. DH was incredible – this was a real stretch for him to deal with intense emotional pain, and he stepped up. One more way our sweet girl made us better people.

Hugs to the entire CD family. So sad to let them go…

Hugs @CountingDown. It seems like many doggy deaths lately. So sad

I’m so sorry, CD - but you loved her so much you gave her the greatest gift. Big hugs to you.

So sorry, CD. It’s such a loss!

I’m sorry too CD.

Here is a good article about our 10,000 steps:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/nation-now/2017/04/14/what-happens-to-your-body-when-you-walk-10000-steps-health-fitness/99681306/

@CountingDown Sorry to hear about your dog. When I was still in high school, we got two cats (brothers). One of them passed away on Monday. I’m very happy that I went down to meet my mom for some exercise on Saturday so I got to see him (I thought he was actually looking much better). He had cancer and thyroid issues, and the cats are at least 16 years old, so we knew it was coming. Even though I haven’t lived there for years it was still hard news to hear (And I’m sad about the brother- they have never been apart before).

@BunsenBurner Thanks for that article, nice read!

Today is a rest day (and apparently a pig out day, as well).

I’m starting to feel a bit of relief. I have a 10 mile run planned for tomorrow, my half is next Saturday, and then I have a 10k on April 30. Then, I won’t have a race a month until Memorial Day. I’m looking forward to adding in some new things and not having to run more than 7 miles for the next several months!!

Hugs to you and your family CD.

Good luck tomorrow, MOWC.

I had a day off yesterday so I did a 12 mile training walk. I plan to do a longer walk tomorrow. This is actually more challenging than I had expected but I am determined to do the entire 39.

It sounds like there is something to be said for the 10000 steps!
