Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Sad to hear about your dog CD. Pups that have good homes arrive at pup heaven with smiles on their faces.

The conversation about “elderly”. Something I talk about often. What I get frustrated with is how many people seem to feel “ok” to fall into that category, of being old. “Act your age!” - what the heck does that mean!?

Elderly to me is more of a condition, not an age. My mom is 83 and I don’t think of her as elderly. She still works part time (at her local Y! Has for 25+years and loves it!) and is generally healthy. She is 83, but call her elderly? -no.

That said, I know 60 year olds who (seem) to settle for a lifestyle - in terms of activity, fashion, retirement, etc. that sounds like they are moving towards the “elderly” fast train.

I’m wondering now which thread was closed - guess I missed that one!!!

The second United Air thread.

I’m with you and the elderly thing. I like to think that age is just a number. I have an eighty three year old neighbor and her 85 yo husband who run circles around those around them. They are definitely young at heart. My 80 yo mil is what you would call spry. But all these people take care of themselves and do things that really interest them, and all of them get out and walk almost every day. I think there is a lot to that.

Here’s my other thing and it might be me. When “people” say they don’t wear this or that. I don’t wear shorts or I don’t wear leggings or whatever it is. To be honest, I dress more trendy and younger than I did 10-15 years ago. I feel more confident than I did 10 or 15 years ago and how I dress reflects that.

If I keep on running, I should add another 8 years. I’m guessing MOWC will live to 135!

“An hour of running statistically lengthens life expectancy by seven hours.”
https://www.google.com/amp/s/mobile.nytimes.com/2017/04/12/well/move/an-hour-of-running-may-add-seven-hours-to-your-life.amp.html

So if you run 3.something hours a day, you’ll live forever?

Eh:

Also this:

I’m not sure I WANT to live that long! Especially if I have to run races!

Well, 15K in the books and it was very tough. It was warm to start and got warmer. We aren’t used to racing “warm” yet, so it took a toll. We didn’t have any water from 3 to 5 miles, and I needed some. I started with a 5K mentality, but, unfortunately, I was in the 15K! I watched my daughter have a huge PR in the 5K with 24:34 (she was aiming for sub 25) and my company president (turns 50 this year) in his first race in 8 years break 20. So- quitting was not going to be an option for me. It just felt SO hard. I caught up with a younger, faster male teammate at about 7 1/2 miles and wound up beating him by 2 minutes. My Oiselle team leader for Nashville ran with me for a little bit in the 9th mile and was very encouraging. I started with a couple miles in the 9:30s, dropped to the low 10s with some lost time at a couple of the aid stations, but I never walked. I sure wanted to, but I was afraid that would be it!
1:32:50 (I expected to be closer to 1:30 but not in this weather, as it turned out). I won my age group and my corporate teams were 1st in the 5K (behind the pres) and 3rd in the 15K (behind me). I’m happy with all that and especially happy that it’s over.

Oh- the best part! As we all know, I’m a head case when it comes to racing. Well, at the 5K starting line, my very self-assured and competitive president (our No. 2 executive) of our Fortune 500 company told me he is absolutely terrified every time he is on a starting line!

Sorry, CountingDown about your dog - that’s gotta be so painful.

Good luck to MOWC on your 15k and nahnah. That’s a lot of races back to back!

Did 10 miles; took 1:25 minutes. First couple of miles were tough then got into a groove.

Just saw your post MOWC. Congrats to your D! And to you for your age group win!

Warm weather races are very tough. You did great considering everything! Strange they’d had no water for first few miles…

Huge congrats to you, your daughter, and your corporate teams, MOfWC! That PR is fantastic!

Well done, MOWC and D! Congrats!

Today’s training walk was 15 miles. I am praying for this kind of weather for the actual walk, it was perfect.

Thanks! My daughter (a priest) was having pre-race doubts that Holy Week was the best time to try for a PR. She’s pretty exhausted. But- she said “Jesus is in the tomb. There’s not a whole lot I can do today!”

Lol, I love that!!!

MOWC, congrats to you and your D!

I don’t think I’m a very stubborn in general, but the times where I am stubborn I am STUBBORN. I was supposed to do a 10 mile run today. Looked at the forecast last night and it showed scattered thunderstorms, very cloudy. Decided I was going to sleep in and try to fit my run in in between the storms. Woke up pretty late this morning to realize there was quite a bit of light coming in through the curtains…opened my back door and felt it was already pretty warm. Whoops! Finally got out there and it was already over 70. Wasn’t feeling it. Started to get a bit light headed. Finally, it hit me: I’m NOT having fun with this. This hasn’t been fun for a while. (Which I’m sure I’ve said probably ever time I’ve talked about it).

Oh well. I stopped at 7. I wasn’t going to try to “race” this half, anyway. I’m definitely going to try to do a 4:1 minute run walk thing. It won’t be pretty, but my goal is to enjoy the course (there are going to be Civil War battle reenactments throughout the course), work on having more positive self-talk during the run, and use this as a way to get my stomach good and ready for the BBQ festival that happens after that is right by the finish line.

Wow @FallGirl , that training walk must take a chunk of time out of your day!

Been doing lots of park going and walking trails with the family this weekend.

3 1/2 Easter miles on tired legs. Happy Easter to those who celebrate. Heading off to my daughter’s church now after a late night Easter Vigil (and feast) at ours last night.

Waiting for my family to arrive for our Easter festivities. Two walks this morning to try and proactively lessen the damage of the carrot cake I plan to enjoy later. Best day to all!

A three mile run and a spin. My right knee was still swollen, but not painful. Sitting wasn’t making it any better, so I decided to try running, and lo and behold it felt fine. (Wondering what is going on there. I suspect 1) weak rotators from the replacement. They can’t always keep up with what I want to do. I have to double back and work on them, 2) some sort of circulation issue. It’s rare, but I have heard of people having this issue post hip replacement. They swell more than they used to. I will have to ice and massage.)

H is getting interested in doing a tri with me at the end of the summer. This is good because he will exercise more regularly but bad because he will compete with me.

A happy and blessed Easter to those who observe! Fortunately the Easter bunny brought only one bag of dark chocolate squares and an Easter lily this year.

I’m sorry about the loss of your dear dog, CD. And your kitty, nahnah. We had a set of cats once. Losing one was initially traumatizing for the survivor but we were shocked to see his true personality of happy friendly cat emerge. I suspect the older female had been bullying him for the first 12 years of his life

Congratulations to the racers, especially MoWC and her D in the steamy 15K. At this point, thinking about the impending label of “elderly”, I just hope we all get some “quality” longevity out of all this exercise

I ran 2.5 this morning with the knees braced and then walked more with my husband. I’ve been doing some strengthening exercises daily.

Wow, haven’t checked in for a few days, lots going on. CBB glad to hear your B is doing a bit better. CD…So sorry about your pup. Everyone has been active, that’s super!

Had a pretty good week. Ran outside a couple mornings, short runs since I brought pup with me! Yesterday we went out again, she did really well again…But today came up lame. I don’t THINK it’s due to the runs since she was fine yesterday and even first thing this morning. I almost think she “rolled her ankle” (in a dog way)playing frisbee this morning. If no improvement I’ll call the vet in the morning. Her front left really seems to be bothering her though. Geez it would be much easier if she could talk!!

Also did a few strength training sessions and tore myself away from my desk at work to take a long-ish walk every day. So it was a pretty decent week (except for poor pup).

Congrats to MOWC and D on their great races!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend - we had a lovely time visiting D - lots of eating, but lots of walking! Did some shopping and spent a wonderful morning at the zoo - we were leaving as most folks were arriving, which was perfect. Lunch at Nando’s, dinner at a fabulous Belgian restaurant, Sunday brunch at our favorite French place - I was glad to get home and see no weight gain. Ran this morning for 6 miles, amazing how good it felt after not running for two days. Pups are still at their vacation home, H will pick them up today. Nice to have a break from a pup walk this morning!
