Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Good job on your races Sabaray, Class of 2015, and Nah12. You guys are tough! I lose toenails all the time–especially when I’m training for really long walks. I’m doing a Walk for Hunger (20–in Boston) next weekend. I did a few hours of garlic mustard weeding again today and a gym workout (weights and elliptical). Going to a bridal shower this afternoon. Bride to be and my youngest D (who will be a bridesmaid) have been friends since first grade (they’re now 27). Made a pledge to myself to avoid the sugary stuff.

MNK - allergies are really bad on this side of the country as well. One of my new coworkers has had a deep chest cough for weeks & was told it was due to allergies. I don’t usually suffer, but I’ve been sneezing like crazy.

Regarding race nutrition, I have started consuming a bagel with ham & cheese practically at the starting line of a half marathon. That, combined with about 3 Clif shot blocks in the second half of the race, seems to do the trick for my blood sugar. I don’t even feel hungry afterward, as long as I get my chocolate milk! I only drink the electrolyte solution when I get one cup of that, and one cup of water. I pour a small splash of the electrolytes into the water & then the water goes down quick & easy & no stomach upset.

I don’t know if saunas help or not but I stay in anywhere from 6-12 minutes. Think it helps adjust to the heat.

I love running in the heat, the sweat, etc. The “I really like Florida” hints didn’t seem to be sinking in with my wife (while on our mini-vacation last week) about maybe living down there!

I am in the process of switching my allergy meds to see if it’s impacting my HR or not - I had been using Zyrtec and am now going to try Claritin to see if that makes a difference. Summer is also slower for me at work, so I’ll probably try and add in some hot yoga this month at least, although time in the sauna sounds better. I’m still never going to love the heat, but I’m going to try to work to manage it better.

Michael, Mr. B agrees that this allergy season is really bad. He is usually off Claritin by mid-April, but this year he tried to stop taking it and had to go back on. Sigh.

Not much exercise other than getting my BP up while watching Mr. take down a few more garbage trees with his new Li ion chainsaw. Ugh.

I hate running in heat, and particularly in humidity. I don’t know how any of you can stand it, and I would avoid it if possible! No good to come from that!

Did a 4 mile trail run up the Tolt pipeline today. Not very far, but it starts with a humongous hill. Actually, three hills. I don’t like starting out like that, too grueling. It seems a good idea to do the exercise earlier, before I have an excuse to not do it.

OMG, bus, that is one tremendous hill run! Great job.

While many of you were running in the heat, climbing hills and tending to allergies I had a great day shopping in Ann Arbor! Ann Arbor is known as “AA2”, but today it was “AA3” - Ann Arbor Athleta!

Picked up a couple of skorts that I had an eye on online - but one of them was out of my size online…I love them both! The batik I can wear casually - and maybe at a real casual day at work. The floral one will be for running and at the beach/beach towns this summer at our cottage:

Love those, abasket! Good haul!

Wow, I totally dig that tropical skirt! Great shopping, @abasket !

Those are so cute abasket! I think you got an “A” in shopping and value!

I love a good skort!

Those are super cute, @abasket - love the tropical print.

Yesterday I ended up going to a Pilates class followed by a 30 minute dedicated stretch class - I wish they had it every week, but sadly it’s an occasional. This morning ran a very slow 6 miles. Just felt good to get moving. Weather is still very muggy - feels more like August than May. Kind of makes you worry what August will feel like!

5.1 cloudy Poconos miles before traveling home to Tennessee later today.

The weekend was pretty much a washout - so much rain! By mid-afternoon yesterday we had 5.5" total for the weekend and I forgot to check after that. The yard is so squishy! Of course today being Monday, it is bright and sunny! Planning on 5-6 miles tonight after work.

nahnah12 - glad you were able to finish your 10K and that heat sounds miserable! I hope the woman you saw ended up OK. I hate when you never find out the “rest of the story” and are left wondering if they recovered.

busdriver - sounds like you did well with your hilly run. You’ll be ready for Pike’s Peak!

sabaray - great job getting out there this morning and that’s a quick turn around after your half marathon!

I know some of you on this thread are finished with actually getting your kiddos into college, but I’ve got a D finishing up junior year in HS. As of today, her class of 2018 is officially “at bat”. Here we go, for the second and last time!

While I LOVED those days @GertrudeMcFuzz , I don’t know that I MISS those times!

I still have one in college - and who will be applying to Master’s programs in a year or so…so not QUITE done yet in our house!

Best of luck to your daughter and household! Is there a “wish list” yet?!

She loves Tulane! She will have to nab one of their FT scholarships to make it affordable though. She has a good shot at being NMF also, that will open lots of doors.

Gave the new Topo’s their first long(er) run since purchase. I ran a trail near the SF Bay, about 5 miles, while my D did her sport thing. Weather was perfect, slight breeze and 75-80 degrees. I was feeling a little tired from heavy Saturday gym workout, which included my favorite body weight exercise, rope climbs.

The Topo’s are interesting with their wide toe box, almost look like waffle shoes a little. Even though they have a 5mm drop, I found out they’re not good for the weight lifting portion of my CrossFit workout.

Good luck to your D, Gertrude. She sounds like a smart young lady, being NMF.

No more races on the horizon for me, which is a relief yet also I’m now missing my main form of motivation. I think I need a “business as usual” routine that can be ramped up as needed if I have a race looming.
