CBB, hugs. I hate to say this… but you might want another opinion. My hip pain is not in any shape and form related to joints and bones issues. Being a woman is not an easy thing.
So glad you are OK, lizardly. That is really scary.
CBB, sorry to hear that. Maybe spinning or swimming? If you have a bike, riding outside, too.
You can get a great work out from spinning and burn lots of calories. Swimming, too, but if you aren’t a swimmer, you should take lessons first in order to get the most out of it.
@Lizardly – yes, I swim, Haven’t done it for exercise in quite a while, but back in the day I taught swimming at summer camps. I’m more likely to go the biking/pilates/rowing path, though, since I don’t belong to a gym with a pool.
@BunsenBurner - I hear ya! But, did you have a hip x-ray done that showed arthritis? Is there anything that can appear to be arthritis but actually isn’t? I may go down to running 1x/week, mix it up more on the other days, and see how it goes.
Since you used “he” to describe your doc, I saw it as a possible red flag. IMO, doc needs to heal himself, and a male doc camnot “heal” his own female body problems. Hence my recommendation of a second opinion. A minor arthritis is not enough to cause excruciating pain per my doc. It is just easy to write it off as the cause and send the patient off. I am not saying that the doc is wrong… Just that I see some red flags… Did the doc look at the entire picture? Any varicose hip veins? Any adenomyosis or other soft tissue issues indicators? Those can’t be seen on the X-ray which is a very imprecise diagnostic tool.

Only 50 runners will be accepted! Oh, and you have to raise at least $5K.
Does doing 112 laps around a baseball field sound like fun? It doesn’t to me, but I am not a runner. On the other hand, no hills. ![]()
I’m a runner, and my answer is a definite “no.”
@BunsenBurner - Thanks for the info. Of course I had to look up “adenomyosis” … Just to clarify – my hip issue does not cause excruciating pain; it’s more of a discomfort.
DH signed me up for a 5K without my knowledge and lived to tell about it. Did it (ran it) this morning. 12 min pace. But can’t find my time, on the website. Oh well.
lizardly, I’m so glad you are ok! That is really scary.
I picked up my bib and shirt for my race on Monday. I originally signed up for the 12k but dropped down to the 5k. Kind of disappointed in myself, but I’m struggling with 3 miles and motivation right now. I have a 10k in June (right after the kids’ last day of school…did I mention I now have to go back an extra day for a stupid meeting?!?), so hopefully I can get it together for that.
I went to a 30 minute core workout last Sunday and I felt it all the way to Wednesday or Thursday. :o I guess that means I need to actually make it a part of my routine!!
Hoping to get out for a run tonight.
I’ve joined a local gym. It’s not cheap, but I like the trainer and nutrition classes. I have to get rid of this belly fat! Very annoying.
That’s great you like the trainer! That’ll help so much, I’m sure! That’s also cool they have nutrition classes. I’d love to hear how those go, as I’ve never taken advantage of those like I probably should.
Good for you jym for running the 5K and for ML for joining the gym.
nahnah - don’t be tough on yourself, you are still running a race even though it wasn’t the distance you planned.
I’m back! Had a little break there.
Lizardly- that is simply horrible and I hope you are recovering from the shock and stress of all that.
My marathon is 2 weeks away. I managed a 17 mile (3 hours 5 minutes) run yesterday with a minute walk every mile. I might be able to survive this. It will be hot and hilly.
You got this, MOWC!! I’m looking forward to hearing about it.
I was looking around last night and I think I may have found the perfect thing to keep me motivated after my 10k through when training for the half starts in August! It’s called the cul-de-sac 5k series, and it has three 5ks in July (7/10, 7/17/ and 7/24). Each one is in the evening, they all take place at a school very close to me, and if you complete all three you get a medal.
I really want to work on getting faster, and I feel like this could be a good distance to begin with. I really want to finish at least one of the under 30 minutes. This will also be a good way for me to see any progress I may make from the first to the last.
I’m just not super excited about paying for it, as you have to pay for each 5k individually.
When the doc sez you are too old to swim fly… Get a new doc and keep swimming.

Hey exercisers: Anyone have a recurring foot pain? I am a daily walker, per fitbit usually 80-110k steps per week. About 5 years ago after a walk, once home & stopped, the first time I got up, I felt like i was walking on broken glass. Going down the stairs was especially rough. I checked it out with a podiatrist, apparently I have great feet and there was nothing wrong that he saw. I got some Dr Sholls insoles from the machine at Wal-Mart, the $40-50 ones and they really helped.
About a year ago I began getting a cramp in one foot, in my arch, behind my big toe. Really a tough place to massage, but I have tried many things, a massage therapist said it was really and did some work on it. The cramp is worse if I go on my tiptoes.
Some days, like today, I almost can’t walk, it hurts so bad. I checked into Plantar fascitis and I really don’t think that’s it.
Over the last six weeks, with an injured dog, my daily exercise has been reduced, more like 8k steps than 12-15k and the cramp is still there, though not as bad. This weekend it’s really bad. The more I walk the worse it is, but not always, and not walking doesn’t make it go away, it just doesn’t aggravate it.
Any ideas or thoughts? I’ve been googling and am going to try ice & Advil for a few days to see if it seems inflammatory.
I would try 3 Advil 3 times a day for a week. And ice. And Hokas- all the time. Don’t walk around barefoot or in flip flops. Wear cushioned shoes all day for awhile.
MOWC, I was thinking…you travel a lot, you are a long distance runner. You are at significantly increased risk for DVT. Bizarre it hits athletes with low pulse rates at a much greater rate than couch potatoes.
busdriver- Yeah, I’ve thought of that. Most of my flights are just a couple of hours and I always get up at least once. This afternoon is 4:45 from Nashville to Oakland, which will be tough. I get an aisle seat and will get up a bunch. I’m dreading it. Nice to go non-stop, but there are drawbacks…
