I definitely don’t follow a low fat diet and I’m not that concerned with calories right now - but that’s a lot of oil, @yauponredux ! I eat a fair amount of poultry, fish and shellfish. I do like poke but unfortunately the poke bar is not an option for me - I think I live on the wrong coast. Blue Apron has the Whole 30 meals. I’ve used Chef’d before and really liked them- they actually just introduced vegan meals so my timing might be good to order. There are a ton of companies that offer the prepared meals but the majority of them are paleo or have terrible reviews. @bacmom, where do you live? I’d like to come over for dinner!
I’ve been following a program for that last 6 months that really focuses on establishing good eating and exercise habits - you focus on one habit at a time for two weeks, then add on. We’re in the second half now and are working on doing all of the habits just a little better than we did previously. It’s been challenging but it’s second nature by now and I feel like I can stick with it. I just feel like I really need to tune up the diet since I can’t do a whole lot for exercise until I’m weight bearing again.
Sabaray - our Costco had a couple of Chefd choices. I don’t remember if they were veggie or had meat/chicken in them. Don’t see them online but hey! Here is a discount gift card!
Thanks @MomofWildChild - i appreciate the info. I got a 25% off coupon today and I need a new pair fairly soon. I think the Arahi is the one I will try. I can’t get to the actual store this week, so I may wait for the next coupon.
Another tip- I wear 1/2 size smaller in Hoka than in other running shoes. This includes Arahi. I love the Arahi. I wear 7 1/2 street shoe, 8 1/2 in almost all running shoes and 8 in Hoka.
My husband went vegetarian some twenty years ago (he has since added fish back in) and I used the Moosewood cookbooks, especially the one Midwest67 refers to above. That one is pretty easy and you can use fewer pots and pans when cooking—good for a novice cook or someone who doesn’t like cleaning up.
I like to make soups and stews this time of year. Your husband can put a bunch of stuff on the stove or in the crockpot (! for This is Us fans!) and cook it all at once. Like he could put onions, garlic, carrots, celery in, sautee a little, then add potatoes, corn, white fish/tofu/beans, chicken or veggie broth. It would be chance for him to be creative.
If price is not an issue, APL shoes from Lulu are stylish and functional. I also like Brooks Levitate - they are for running, but would work as a regular gym shoe.
@yauponredux I CrossFit and finding a good running/sprinting/jumping (rowing, jump rope/box jumps, etc.) shoe that also feels light, level, comfortable and supportive for power/Olympic lifting is difficult. But the two I have found that I like are the Under Armour Speedform Slingshots and the Reebok Nano’s. I would not use these shoes to run a 5K or more. But I’d rather lift in socks than use most running shoes when lifting in the gym.
@sushiritto much respect! I’m nowhere near powerlifting or even a 5K yet - am just starting to do some weights work with a trainer, and my preferred cardio is on a bike or walk/jog intervals on a treadmill. But considering that this time last year I was using a cane and 80 pounds heavier, I’m happy just to be walking in the gym doors, especially when out of town where it takes extra effort.
@BunsenBurner@MomofWildChild thanks for your suggestions! Our local running shoe store that really knew their stuff and introduced me to Hokas has closed, so I’m going to have to go to a chain sporting goods store and may not be able to rely on an expert staff.
@yauponredux Wow, that’s great progress. I wish you G-d’s speed towards your health goals. Keep it up! Through all my nonsense mentioned above, I should have just said every shoe is compromise when it comes to various exercises.
Also, if you know your shoe size, then you can order Hoka’s directly from Hoka or one of many online sites that cater to shoes.
I bought my D both the Hoka Tracer and the Arahi. @MomofWildChild recommended the Arahi and my D loves the shoe. The last few months she has mainly been in the gym and her running is mainly sprints but she is thrilled. She tends to have bad ankles and she can work out hard in both the Arahi and the tracer and her ankles don’t hurt. She thought if she goes back to longer running she would probably try the tracer first.
I bought the Hoka Clifton 4 and I am in love with it. I mainly wear it in the gym but I’ve done a few runs in them. It is super lightweight @yauponredux , not as much cushion as I had in my Stinson but I prefer it. It’s the best shoe I’ve had. I used to wear the Brooks Ghost but I like this better. I find it a very stable shoe. Not to mention it is really pretty. Hoka ships super quick in Ca you might get it in a day or two. If you’re near Goleta/santa Barbara it’s worth a visit to the Deckers Showcase design store. I briefly looked at the new Hoka with the knit tops when I was there a few weeks ago. They might be lighter weight. I love that most of the Hokas have a roomy toe box. @sabaray -wishing you quick healing
@MomofWildChild - my D called this morning while driving to work. She once again thanked me for her Hoka Arahi shoes. She is so happy to be able to exercise without pain.
Her next want is a fitness tracker or watch. She wants one that plays music and also tracks her running route not just distance. Suggestions? Of course she also asked if I would split the cost with her.
@mom60, the Fitbit Ionic plays music and tracks running routes (it’s got GPS capabilities, unlike the lower end Fitbits). It’s expensive, too, though. I like the fact that I can swim with it, and it’s much sturdier than my old Fitbit. I got slammed by a wave on a coral reef last week and my watch got hit HARD. I was sure I had ruined it, but it was fine!
That’s the Garmin 645 - on my wish list. Not yet available, not sure what music services are available to use with it. At one point it looked like Spotify Premium was required, but that no longer seems to be the case. Looks like it will retail around $450.
