Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I love Thanksgiving too, @makemesmart.

@Sue22, sounds like you’re being very smart in taking it easy. Hope it resolves soon and without complications.

It was cold running yesterday, but not unbearable. I went under 10min/mile which is a good pace for me, but not my PR. Was 4th in my age group out of 13 and happy with that. SIL was 3rd in Mens 25-29, and S (who had not trained at all) was 8th of 71 in Mens 20-24. D hasn’t been running much so we ran together.

That’s great, @FallGirl! Sounds like a fun and successful race for all involved.

I skipped yesterday’s turkey trot but got out midday for 3.5. Ran through campus and watched a bit of the football teams practice so let’s just say it wasn’t a lightning fast run. Long day of cooking and cleaning up. Have you noticed it’s the folks who don’t clean up who are always using yet another clean glass?!

Great run @FallGirl and can’t agree with you more @sabaray, COL!
I avoided the outside as it has been so cold, hats off to you all who run outside! Ran 5 miles on the treadmill on Wednesday and then just cooked and ate yesterday! Gained 4 lbs! SMH! Went to the gym this morning, (interestingly very few people were there at 6am) did 45’ stepmaster. I am surprised at how much calories the machine is telling me I have “exerted”, almost three-times as much as my Wednesday’s run. It was not easy using the stepmaster but can’t it be right to be more “calorie-burning” than running?

@Sue22 I hope your neck feels better soon too.

Count me as someone who really enjoys the Thanksgiving holiday as well.

Well the good news is that we’re getting rain here and the bad air quality long gone. And the skies were clear and beautiful and the weather was perfect for 10K Turkey Trot yesterday. I thought I ran faster than last year when I saw the official clock at the finish line, but the results online has me clocking in 2 minutes slower. I hadn’t run any distance outside in almost 2 weeks due to the air quality and my legs were their typical state of sore, but I was sure when crossing the finish line that my time was better than last year. Oh well. There’s always the next race.

Glad the air quality is finally improving. Sure it felt good to get outside!

Banner week for me as I completed my third “lifting” session for the week. It went well and I got some pointers from the regulars, which was helpful. Quite a few of my exercises use the cable machines and I’m not particularly efficient or adept at setting those up. Finished up with some time on the elliptical. Assuaged my guilt over mashed potatoes!

One reason counting calories has helped me was because I used to think that if ate say one donut I had “ blown” my day and I might as well just give up for the day. Although I have been eating very healthy the one day I had a donut Knowing that it was “only” 300 calories ( and not 1000 as I imagined for a minute ) meant I could cut back a bit (had a tuna steak with avocado for dinner instead of chicken and brown rice, kept me within my goals.

I had a nice 7 mile hike with the club Thanksgiving Day morning, then one of my kids surprised me and joined me fo ra 6.5 mile hike yesterday. I’m taking today off, but going out for 8-10 miles tomorrow before winter storms move in.
My knees are sore, but nothing Advil cannot handle.

I was relieved we had simple, but satisfying food on Thanksgiving.

I’ve fallen off my weight lifting routine, but I feel certain I can get back on track next week. I keep telling myself it’s okay, just meet yourself where you are. I’m still struggling with how to manage my irregular work schedule.

Icy mix here this morning so no long run. Taking a rest day. Mr. Sabaray is working, guests have departed, just me and the pups. Hopefully get the run in tomorrow.

By the time I got dinner on the table I was so tired of looking at it I didn’t want to eat it! Indulged in my favorite potatoes and Brussels sprouts but that was the extent of the damage.

To me, the calories from the donut is the least significant issue. The saturated fat and sugar would be more of a focus for me. But a treat is a treat. A week or two ago, I went out to dinner and had one piece of the freshest sourdough bread. That’s my treat!

Lazy day so far for me. Typically, Thursday’s are my scheduled off days, but this week I had the Turkey Trot. Hopefully, I’ll be getting off the couch soon and heading off to the gym. Looking forward to tomorrow and doing nothing.

@sushiritto

If you tell me you put a heaping portion of butter on that fresh sourdough bread, I’ll agree it was a treat! :slight_smile:

11 hiking miles today, all flat, but blustery winter winds rushed in.

I was pleased my legs felt strong 3+ hours but my knees ache now. Advil!

Any snow there this morning, @Midwest67? I’m really impressed with that mileage, particularly in winter.

Yesterday was not great. 3.5 miles but a few walk breaks in there. Mr. Sabaray’s “expert” opinion is that my arthritis doesn’t like the cold and that’s probably part of it. This morning I didn’t want to push my luck so headed to the gym for a repeat of last Monday’s workout and some time on the elliptical. Finished up with my PT exercises and called it a day. Something is better than nothing!

@sabaray, @sushiritto, Thanks for the good thoughts. I got out yesterday and today for the first time in three weeks. I could definitely feel it in my legs and I was slower than the last time I ran, but I was a able to do a couple of comfortable miles without discomfort in my neck.

I’m impressed by those of you who can run in sub-freezing temps. I’m a wuss. If I have to wear a hat I’m not going out!

@sabaray Luckily, I was out and back from yesterday’s hike before the real snow hit. I did get cold headwinds, as the storm began to move in. But the trails were dry, and I was going at a brisk pace.

I’m leading a hike there next month, and I’ve got to scout it several times before the actual day. Yesterday was “reconnaissance”.

Overnight, we did get snow, but it looks like we missed the brunt of the storm. It’s beautiful snow, but heavy and wet and not pleasant to shovel. It really puts a damper on my dog walking because our little terrier’s paws cannot take it when it’s too cold, too snowy, or we hit patches of salt. We use Musher’s Secret, and that helps, but it not a 100% fix.

@Sue22 I am a wuss too. Lol
Had a beautiful, beautiful Sunday here, went to a spin class to shed some sweat.
@sushiritto, we are done with our Christmas shopping as we decided to get the Assault Airrrunner! It is going to be hubby’s birthday present too! Now no one could complain of “poor weather could not run” anymore!

@Midwest67 No butter for me. I eat my fresh sourdough sans butter.

@Sue22 I’m a CA wimp when it comes to running in “sub-freezing” temps, except I define “sub-freezing” as anything below 55 +/- degrees. :)) And my gym is a big industrial space (no HVAC) and, if I’m alone nowadays, I immediately turn on the ceiling heating elements not that they do a whole lot.

@makemesmart OMG! You’re my idol. 8-> Once you and your H get up to speed on it, I want a full report please! I’ve spent so much money on exercise equipment already, I wish I could get an Air Runner.

Back at it later today, Sunday was a well-deserved rest day for me. <:-P

@sushiritto
Lol. We sure will do! Got an email today saying the machine is on back order and hopefully will arrive before the big eating holiday! :slight_smile:

It’s been cold here - in the 20’s! That’s cold for us. Yesterday I did an easy 5k around our neighborhood track and of course my foot and ankle felt much better. Today was a gym day - cable pull downs and multiple rounds of pushups. I’m trying something new with running, so I followed up with a 15 minute run at a prescribed pace. I did use the Woodway and my foot didn’t bother me at all. Good indication I had been overdoing things before. Patience is not one of my stronger qualities!
