Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Whew. I managed a lift session today. I haven’t lifted since before my Utah hiking trip. A month!

Boy oh boy, my mind was contorting itself trying to wriggle out of lifting today until I almost ran out of time before I need to leave for a meeting.

But, I did it! I dialed way back on the weight, across the board. I’m just going to meet myself where I am, and move forward from there.

Another motivating factor was knowing I could log in here afterwards and post, and it would feel good and lend some accountability.

Circuit strength class for me this morning. I tell myself I can do anything for 45 minutes. We do rounds, first each exercise for 1 minute, then 40 seconds the second time. It’s challenging but fun and it’s done. The regular attendees are all runners so the class is definitely targeted to that demographic. I’m trying to challenge myself with heavier weights and this is a good place to do so - lots of hands on instruction.

Being lazy this morning, didn’t get up for my weekly yoga class! I have never done hot yoga though I could imagine how relaxing it would feel afterwards. @kanagawa I do try to go to sauna several times a week.

@makemesmart it’s very relaxing! it’s like a sauna and yoga session in one.

I didn’t realize how much I love walking the dog and listening to audiobooks until it’s too cold and too snowy for him to go much farther than up the block!

@sabaray Running outside in the 20’s? :open_mouth:

Last night was a max rep “ladder” circuit of 7 mins each of squats (too much squatting this cycle!), bench press and then deadlifts. With 3 minutes of rest in between stations, total time of 27 minutes. An unusual curcuit in my programming, all power lifts, but hey why not. Finished off with a 1.5 mile run.

Thursdays are always rest days with my program. I wouldn’t mind a run today, but it’s raining and Sunday looks like good weather, though 55 degrees which, translating into my temperature scale, is approaching my 32 degrees. :))

I’m not fond of using treadmills, sure wish I had one of those new-fangled Air Runners like @makemesmart. 8->

You just need to have the right gear for cold weather. I have to say I prefer running in the low 50’s but around here it seems we go from summer to winter now. I’m trying to stick to three days of running a week at a less intense pace. There’s enough other stuff I like to do that is probably better for me right now. I have Pilates tomorrow - my regular instructor is on vacation so I am working with someone new, simply because I don’t want to lose my recent improvements. We’ll see how that goes. I’ve taken classes with her previously and like her so that’s always a good start.

I enjoy hot yoga but it is time consuming and I haven’t gone recently as a result. It absolutely feels good!

@sabaray Are you still doing Reformer too?

Have you guys heard of Eldoa? Maybe you’ve mentioned it here before. I’ve never heard of it, but it’s cramping my style. My gym just started a 5-week 1x per week Eldoa class on Tuesdays. The class is from 6:45-7:45 PM and I’m a bit annoyed, because it’s a stretch and breathing class, so one of the gym’s owners asked me and others not to be so loud, say like dropping barbells and plates. >:P Ya, but what’s the point of having gym where you can’t use the barbell and plates that you provide? :-??

So, my last two Tuesday evening workouts have been shortened and/or modifed, where I’m not making much noise at 6:45 PM. This week it worked out just fine, because all I had was core work at the end of my workout. Last week I had to shorten my barbell bouncing. ~X( I’m hoping it’s just 3 more Tuesdays and it’s done, but I realize the gym has to diversify and bring in other sources of income.

My Reformer class is on hiatus during the holidays. Generally during a private lesson I do some work on the Reformer but more on the mat, chair and Cadillac. I promise I’m still getting my workouts in!

I would be frustrated with the gym situation. My studio has hosted trainings similar to what you describe, but at times that don’t interfere with regular instruction and targeted to fitness professionals. Given the emphasis on spine correction and fascia it seems a good partner program to Pilates. Not sure how it aligns with your gym’s philosophy.

@sushiritto - I ran yesterday morning - temp was 32 but the wind was 22mph. The worst thing was that my face was cold. I love running in 35-45 degree weather.

@sushiritto you have the most expressive posts. Lol since we east coast is generally three-years behind the west coast in terms of fancy exercises, I need to google Eldoa, it looks like something I would really enjoy doing! Hope the training ends soon for you but the trainers will spread it eastward quickly!

@FallGirl that sounds painful! Hats off to you too!

Did 5 miles on treadmill this morning, first time under 45 minutes!

My trip to Texas was kind of a disaster for my leg healing - even though my sister did all the heavy lifting when it came to moving my parents’ stuff from place to place, I still had to walk up and down their stairs constantly. So I’m not beating myself up about it, but since I’ve returned home I’ve been diligent about doing PT exercises and icing. I go to my next PT session on Monday. Ugh, I’m tired of this…

Keep up the PT, ML. I know how frustrating it is but it sounds like time is needed for healing. When I had a broken heel, something that helped me was using some youtube workouts. No joke, I googled “hurt foot chair workouts” and found some good ones by a woman named Carolyn Jordan. I was able to maintain fitness even though I was completely non-weight bearing. You might want to check some of those out.

@makemesmart - our newest speedster!

I had my Pilates workout this morning and it was really enjoyable to work with someone new. Tried a lot of new exercises which were appropriately challenging.

@FallGirl

I purchased a merino wool neck chute (Icebreaker brand).

It’s thin, much thinner than my other fleece neck gaiters. I like it for hiking because I can pull it up over my nose and protect my face from the wind without feeling smothered. Then it’s easy to pull it back down have it just around my neck. I have very short hair, so no “hair scarf”.

Thanks @Midwest67 . I need to get something like that.

Do you have a link to the one chute you bought @Midwest67 ??

@abasket

Yes!

THANK YOU @Midwest67 !!!

December is a tough month to stay on track. This weekend was a social group run followed by our holiday get together, which included way too many carbs but who can say no to waffles?! This morning I did my Monday lifting routine and a 15 minute treadmill run. Staying consistent with exercise reminds me I don’t want to overeat or make poor choices in the food department, so that’s where the focus needs to be.

How’s everyone else doing?

I’m sitting at my desk working too much. I’m doing okay with the eating, but I find I’m not sticking to any sort of schedule for lifting bc each day is so different.

I thought I was going to lift today, but I’ll be lucky to finish my work before midnight.

Yesterday’s hike was very wet. We walked thru 3-5 inches of water at certain points on the trail. Some people turned around. I stuck with it & did 9 miles. I think I’m going to give myself waterproof socks for Xmas.

The real food challenges — for me — will be when the cookies appear. I won’t bake them, but the kids might. And for sure, people at work will bring them in eventually.

I am so attracted to baked goods! Waffles? Absolutely! Bring them on!

I used to drink wine and switched to beer. I think it might be working out better for me. One serving of wine is five ounces. One serving of beer is twelve ounces and is more filling. Easy to stick to one beer. NOT easy to stick to 5 oz of wine! I think it would be really difficult to abstain, so not going there.

I asked a couple other people from the hiking club if they wanted to go on a brewery tour with me. They said yes, and now I’ve got a friend date. I really need to expand my circle of friends! Very important for wellness!

I wanted to sneak out to see a movie this week, and the list of possible people to invite is shockingly small.

The club is doing a hike on Weds, and I’m going to try to arrange work so I can make it. I always feel great afterwards.
