Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Cold and damp, but walked the dog three miles after my dentist appointment today.

Live tonight at the gym: Eldoa vs. barbell bouncing. It’s Tuesday! :))

The final portion of my evening’s workout is a 7-minute HIIT that includes lots of quick barbell work. I can’t wait to be shushed like I’m in a library and making too much noise. I could switch around some of my programming, but maybe I feel like being a rebel tonight. :-j

Another round of Pilates this morning. I’m working hard on the jackknife and my core is hating me! Nice walk with the pups after work. Dinner out but it was a large salad with some grilled chicken.

We’ll need a report on the gym, @sushiritto. Being shushed would drive me nuts!

Looks like we are finally on track to get some significant snow which doesn’t thrill me in the slightest. Low thirties this morning but I figured I’d better get an outdoor run in while I could, so a short 3.2 miles around the neighborhood, finishing up with the big hill to home. Big walk with the pups to lower my HR. Glad to have it done as I just wasn’t feeling it this morning. Only a little slower than the last time I ran it, but my foot feels better so I’m sure the lower mileage is helping. Put the circuit class on my calendar for tomorrow since I’m not doing weights today. Hopefully the snow will track further to the south than it’s projected but they’re talking upwards of a foot!

Bah, humbug, I hate winter!

@sabaray I don’t know if I’ll ever get the jackknife under my belt.
I have been out of commission for a few weeks now. My knee got worse and swelled and I could barely bend or walk on it and it’s been extremely painful. My PT is great but I had to finally acknowledge that the knee wasn’t getting better. I had an appointment on Monday with a sports medicine orthopedist. Pretty sure it is a torn meniscus. Waiting now for the insurance to approve the MRI.
I’m missing my strength training class and my Pilates classes. I can ride the incumbent bike now but only on a 1 or 2 tension. Have been able to do some arm machines at the gym and some ab work on the mat. It’s just hard to motivate myself without the classes.
I’m really happy I live in Ca. I am a weather wimp. I don’t like to exercise outside in heat or cold. Im in awe of you who go out in that cold weather. I’m hoping that I can deal with this knee problem to the point I can run on it again.

Last night, I finished up my workout right at 6:45, maybe a minute or two over. I’m making an effort to get to the gym a few minutes earlier on Tuesdays, so I can avoid the Eldoa class. I finished my workout last night with a 5-minute treadmill run with a 30-ish lb Bulgarian bag on my back, so the Eldoa attendees probably think I’m some kind of a nut. Oh well. The barbell banging was done by about 6;30. Anyway, one of the gym owners thanked me for shutting it down, so as much as I like to think I’m a rebel, I’m not. :slight_smile:

@mom60 I’m a weather wimp too, but I do enjoy warm weather exercise. I’ve always enjoyed a nice run or gym time in 80-90 degree weather. I think if I could pull off the compression leggings look, I might be able to get out an run in the 40-50 degree weather we have here in the AM, but I don’t think I could. I hate winter too!

@mom60

I hope you can get your knee functioning well soon!

The dog & I only made it about a mile this morning! That wind!

I’m going to go down to the basement & lift now, when I really just want to take a nap.

I don’t mind the cold so much, but hope we miss the snow. I was out of town so today was my first time running outside in a week (I did use the hotel treadmill).
@Midwest67 - the merino neck chute is on my Christmas list! Sent the link to H and told him what color. I don’t really care about gifts and would have just bought it myself, but he is big on me having “packages to open”.

When running/dressing for running the rule of thumb is to dress how you would dress for 20 degrees warmer than the actual air temperature to allow for your body heating up. So if you are headed out in 30 degree weather, you dress for 50 and besides the first few minutes you tend to forget that’s it’s so cold - unless there is wind!

Of course with heat, you can only wear so little clothes - but I find that hot is hot!

I find myself sweating no matter the temp. Even when it’s frigid.

Try to be patient, @mom60 - that sounds very painful. I know you’ll be able to get back to doing the classes you enjoy. The camaraderie of shared suffering can really help you push through a tough workout - or really, any workout. Hope the injury isn’t as significant as a torn meniscus but please check in and let us know how you’re doing.

I was digging thru some boxes in the basement — donate, toss, keep — and came across some cross country ski gear. Hmmmm…that used to be fun. I need new bindings though.

Maybe I’ll take the skis in for an estimate. Usually the good snow days are few and far between.

I always knew I was dressed right for x-country skiing when if at first I wondered if I was going to be too cold.

Happy memories of the kids and I piling in the car to go ski at the local park with gentle hills.

Wouldn’t it be great to have those skis ready to go if the conditions were right? Maybe there are some folks in the hiking club who also enjoy cross country.

I enjoyed figure skating as a kid and my husband played hockey, so we’re all about ice sports at my house. Unfortunately no rink close by but we both still have our skates. Isn’t this why we exercise? So we can do “fun” sports?

This morning I made it to circuit class. There were only two of us but my fellow sufferer was a woman I’ve run with several times, so we knew each other and it was fun. Lots of Bosu burpees and bodyweight exercises.

@Midwest67 how about X-country skiing indoors?

Thursday is a day off for me!

@sushiritto

Hmmm…looks like a nice machine to get dusty and maybe hang clothes on. :wink:

No way! I missed out on buying a used one in like new condition on Craiglist about 6 months ago. I really want one! Simulates X-country skiing, good core work, arms, shoulders, etc. Should be a staple of every gym.

@sabaray

Thanks for the nudge. I tossed the skis in the car, so next time I’m out by REI I’ll stop in & inquire about new bindings.

@sushiritto

But you LIKE working out! :wink:

I would caution folks with bad knees to avoid running with sand bags. Not a good idea with that added weight.

I’m pretty sure that I’m the only here on CC running with a sand bag (actually it’s a Bulgarian bag). As the disclaimer states, “don’t try this at home.” :wink:

@Midwest67 Guilty as charged!

@makemesmart Did you finally get your Air Runner? 8->

Coming to the end of a programming cycle that has emphasized “stamina squatting” (i.e., lots of squats). I’m very happy about that. <:-P

Long week at work with the end of the year approaching. I was feeling a little sore this morning so instead of my “lifting” routine I ran instead. 3.2 miles, a slight variation on my usual route. Moderate, sloping hill instead of the killer climb. Snow is staying to the south of us thankfully.

I need a goal because I’m starting to lose focus and motivation. Workouts are getting a bit haphazard as in I’m just doing what I feel like doing. I know I don’t want to run long distances. I think I might just need a rest day.
