Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Soccer involves running. If you want soccer stamina you’ve got to run. Pretty simple.

I wonder if anything here would be helpful: https://www.activekids.com/soccer/articles/soccer-conditioning-tips-and-tricks

Thanks @sabaray . I just bookmarked the site. Will be looking forward to check out and attempt the drills on the site.

@Midwest67 I agree. A de-load week is always good. I just came off of one.

Do you have “change plates”? They offer small “denominations” of weights. As a rule of thumb, I’d shoot for a 2% increase in weight each week. Ultimately, I’d go by how you feel with each week with each successive lift.

Yes, I have a 2.5# plates, as well as a set of fractional weights.

Today is lifting day & I’m looking forward to it!

This evening I have both Romanian and standard deadlifts on the menu, plus pull-ups and a few other movements. Last night the gym was empty, but for me. Must be 4th of July week. :smile:

The re-setting at lower weights and taking more modest jumps up in weight on the bar feels very good, so far.

We’ll see how it goes in a couple weeks when I’m back up to hard-to-move weights.

Progress in chin-ups continues. Not quite to being able to do 2 in a row, but I feel like I can see the goal post thru the mist.

Shocked myself yesterday with sets of one (unassisted chins). Three minute rest between sets. I wasn’t feeling particularly strong yesterday (funny how that works, isn’t it?) and I did a PR of ten sets of one.

Happy!

@Midwest67 Patience and perseverance. The 2nd will come. Do you do ring rows or inverted rows (a reverse bench press)?

@sushiritto

Nope! I’m continuing with my very basic program. Twice a week.

One day is low bar back squats (5x3), bench (5x3) deadlifts (2x3) plus unassisted chins (sets of one to failure).

Second day is low bar back squats (@ 80%; 3x5), Press (5x3), assisted chins five sets to failure.

Adding 2-2.5 # every week on all lifts except DLs (+5). Will do this as long as I am able to make progress.

Still hiking one day a week.

I know, you’d be bored to death! :slight_smile:

I only mention it because those exercises I mentioned could help you build more pulling strength for your pull-ups. No worries either way. Keep doing what you’re doing!

Ya, I don’t want to become bored, so I enjoy the smorgasbord of exercises in my program. There are several gym members that I’m friendly with that just do the basics, bench press, strict press, squat and deadlift. Whatever works for you.

Last Sunday, I decided to tackle the interior hills on my trail run. The perimeter of the trail is relatively flat-ish, but the interior is has some really steep climbs and descents. My legs have been recovering since.

I hope to announce TWO unassisted chin-ups soon. I can feel I’m getting close!

That’s great, Midwest. I am down to one lightweight band instead of the two industrial strength ones I started with! The weather here has been unpleasant to say the least, but it was only 63 at 5:30 am today so I got a fairly decent 8.1 miles in. Only my second run of the week after 5.3 on Monday. Tuesday I did an upper body strength boot camp workout followed by a spin class. Wednesday was a metabolic workout, Thursday was spin. Rest day Friday. No boredom here.

My second year of PN coaching has ended. While I’m glad I did it, I don’t think I’ll be doing it a third or fourth time as several in my cohort are doing. There are an equal number expressing their dissatisfaction with the marketing techniques and how the $$ winners are selected. I think it’s a good program but I think it could be shorter and I think there need to be options for people who aren’t professional athletes but are looking for sport specific nutrition coaching. At this point I’d only recommend it if you are significantly overweight and an emotional eater.

@Midwest67 Yay! Out of curiosity, are you doing chin-ups or pull-ups. I typically associate chin-ups with your palms facing you. And with pull-ups, your palms face out. Either way, you’re going to get it. ?

@sabaray 8.1 miles is getting up there in my book. And awesome that you’re progressing towards no bands. Can’t wait for announcement of your first unassisted pull-up.

I’ll be on my way soon to my workout. Sushipup wears me out. She would make a tremendous midfielder or goalie, if there were a soccer league for dogs.

Pull-ups, bench press, sprints and burpees are programmed today. Along with some barbell and midline (core/abs) work.

@sabaray

I was listening to a podcast and the guest was a Starting Strength Coach, female, who trains doing weighted chins.

She was asked how long does it usually take for a female to be able to do an unassisted chin up and she said “A lot longer than you want. Just keep working at it”. I LOVED her answer. So real.

@sushiritto I’m only doing chins right now (palms facing me). A recent change is training chins 2x a week.

Long hot hike today. 13 miles, and thankfully most of it in the shade of trees. I’m leading next week’s hike in the prairie with no shade. 11 miles. Uff.

Yeah, the struggle is real. Today I was thinking how much easier it was to be fat but I definitely don’t want to go there! Just got to keep plugging along. Pilates core exercises and some foam rolling/stretching today.

Today was also my fun day with the dogs. Worked on the long lead with the puppy. Playtime in their pool. They are good and tired!

I realize I need a rest or active recovery day, but it’s so hard to stay away from gym on Sundays. I ran my usual trail near the bay but took a different tact up and down the interior of the hill. There’s very little shade on the trail, but thankfully the temp only reached high 70’s.

Weighted pull-ups are sometimes programmed for me. It’s an excellent tool for building strength. @Midwest67 are you considering doing one chin up with a light weight?

@sushiritto

No, no weighted chin-ups in the near future.

The last two weeks have been Day One = sets of one unassisted chin-up —- 3 minute rest between sets — until failure.

Day Two = AMRAP (as many reps as possible) with an assist band, 4-5 sets with a 3 minute test between sets.

I had a noticeable improvement in two weeks, which makes me think I’m getting close to 2 unassisted.

One day (!!!) I hope I can do five unassisted in a row. I hope I haven’t cursed myself by posting my goal!

@sushiritto I definitely need solid recovery days or I’m dragging!

Bam.

TWO unassisted chins in a row! Even better, I was able to do four sets of two with a 3 minute rest between sets.

I’m so psyched to see the hard work paying off! Making progress! Hurrah for persistence & baby steps! :slight_smile:

@Midwest67 ?️‍♀️??

Those emoji’s don’t look as good as they do on my iPhone.

Everyone be safe in this heat wave! I’m thinking of all our runners here!
