Thankfully, pleasant weather here in NorCal for the next two weeks or so. Although I can’t wake up early in the AM, I see a ton of runners out there early.

Very hot and humid here - no plans to run anytime soon. I’m going to let this heat wave pass. Heat is not my friend. Monday I went to the gym after camp and spent some time on the elliptical (boring, I know) but took the day off yesterday, just exhausted. Sabapup and I had a big walk but that was about it. I had Pilates this morning but this weather just takes all my energy. Glad I have some other activities to fall back on - oh, and the puppy who is unfazed by the weather. If anything, it serves to recharge her batteries.

I am struggling with the new format on my phone - aging vision, white space and light ink make the struggle real. I’m still reading along - big kudos to you, @Midwest67 for those chins!

I keep thinking of stuff - I did get a Withings scale as part of Prime day - instant grits and chickpea pasta too. It’s fascinating to see what Amazon thinks I might be interested in now. Here’s one item I’m going to have to pass on:

https://www.amazon.com/Sweet-Trimmer-Women-Sample-X-Large/dp/B01KGPXPYQ/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=1P9HZC0HB1ZEE&keywords=sweet+sweat+waist+trimmer&qid=1563400508&s=gateway&sprefix=sweet%2Caps%2C166&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1

Wow, that’s a fancy schmancy scale. I still have my 1950’s style scale in my bathroom handed down from my ancestors. But how much were they during the Prime Day Sale?

“Instant grits”? There’s a line from the movie My Cousin Vinny, where Mr. Tipton who’s on the witness stand says “No self-respectin’ Southerner uses instant grits.”

Hmmm…I’m a transplant so I can get away with it. Definitely don’t consider myself a Southerner!

Scale was $49 - 50% off. I’ve got one of the ancestral scales too, but can you say impulse buy?

I’ve never had grits, so what do I know.

50% off? Wow, story of my life. Day late, dollar short.

My mature terrier barely makes it around the block in this heat. I had to pick him up and carry him the rest of the way home one morning last week.

I’m on the schedule to lead an 11 mile shade-less hike this coming Sunday. Luckily, the high 90s & 100s are supposed to move on by then. Chance of rain, which is okay as long as it’s not a lightening storm.

Fingers crossed for a cloudy cooler day!

Well, the heat and humidity have arrived. Yesterday I started the day off with a speed and agility workout, which I really enjoy. Lots of combination movements and running. I’m trying to avoid thinking about the weather and just running with it, if that makes any sense. Followed that workout with a walk with Sabapup and then a trip to the vet with the puppy, which is a workout in and of itself. This morning Sabapup decided that the puppy was old enough to join her on our morning rounds, so we had an abbreviated walk and the puppy did well on lead. Today will likely be a rest day for me as Mr. Sabaray is out of town and I can’t risk sickness or injury when I’m in charge of everything with no backup!

Not sure how I feel about the Withings scale. It tells me all kinds of information - bone, water, muscle percentage, fat percentage, weight, BMI - and none of it is making me feel too good about myself. But it does chart trends and that will be the handiest feature of all. Or so I’m telling myself!

@sabaray

Scales have never been good for my mental health! It sounds silly, but I’m much more content avoiding those numbers, completely.

I don’t mind loosely tracking calories and protein grams on MFP! That’s super helpful for me. I’m hitting + 125 grams of protein per day, which is my goal for strength training.

I picked up some heavy stuff at work the other day. It felt good to be able to do it myself. In the past, I would’ve gone straight to one of the younger men & asked them to do it for me.

I’ve always thought about buying one of those fancy schmancy scales, but I don’t want the darn scale communicating with my iPhone and letting Apple and the world know my health info.

I was at the local mall last night and decided to get a plant-based dessert alternative, like a frozen yogurt, but healthier. Allegedly. Anyway, I saw a bunch of people in workout clothes coming out all sweaty, one guy without a shirt. I decided to investigate. Lo and behold, there’s a business at the mall called “Barry’s Bootcamp.” Of course, other than the paraphernalia shop and the frozen health drink bar, I couldn’t actually see inside where people workout. I did see a red room with neon lights. I heard it’s $36 per 1-hour session. And it’s the “best workout ever.” The mall also has a Soul Cycle too. So, now there’s Orange Theory, F45 and a Barry’s Bootcamp and Soul Cycle nearby. The exercise business must be doing REALLY good.

I sometimes ref local youth club soccer games and I got an email this morning that they’ve instituted a State Referee Fitness Test. Well, this ought to be a lot of fun.

I heard on the news this morning that a 32-year former football player died of heat stroke. So be careful out there!

Thursday was a day off finally. Back at it tonight.

Perhaps referring to the fitness test mentioned here, involving sprints and intervals (which a soccer referee will be doing as s/he runs around the field to maintain a good view of the action)?

@sushiritto

Yes, in the suburb where I work there are soooo many yoga and work-out places (pilates, barre, Orange Theory…). And, then there are places to get food and drink. LOTS of food & drink places. And Med Spas!

I made a mental note that these are the types of businesses that are not directly competing with Amazon & other online monsters.

That is a super cute factoid about you & coaching youth soccer.

Thanks for the link. I didn’t investigate it originally, but it’s for a Grade 6 referee anyway, which I’m not. Phew! :relieved:

I’d hate to fail that running start, 40-meter sprint, in 9 seconds. And 150 meters in 45 seconds followed by a 50-meter walk.

Oops and I forgot there’s a Barre nearby too. I have no idea what it is, but I pass by it often. And Planet Fitness went public and seems to be doing very well. I’m just amazed that there’s so much money to be made in the exercise business.

I’ll be honest, I ref for the extra cash. It’ll make a excellent retirement gig someday. I only ref the younger kid’s games. When they get older, then players and the parents take things WAY too seriously.

Lululemon has partnered with SoulCycle and now Barry’s for apparel. It’s big business, I guess.

Longer pup walk this morning, then went to start my car to head to Pilates and the starter was uncooperative so I walked the mile there and back. 90 degrees, 66% humidity - blech. I think it will be a quiet afternoon at my house.

Yesterday I rowed a 5K, air-biked (indoors) a 5K and then ran two 1.5 mile time trial “sprints.” High 80’s yesterday. Legs are dead today, but it’s a DELOAD week this week.

For anyone that’s interested, the CrossFit Games begin on August 1st streamed various places live on the Internet. I’m not sure if CBS Sports Network will be carrying it live, but they’ll eventually produce a series of shows after the games recapping the events.

I’ve never watched the CF Games! Might be time to YouTube some highlights.

Last weekend I went up to WI for some training hills, in anticipation of a hiking trip out west towards the end of August.

About 7 miles of hills where I saw plenty of (crazy) trail runners! I took a lunch break and the. went off in a less hilly direction and did another 8.5 miles.

I was treated to meadows full of blooming wild flowers! Gorgeous!

I was so hot & sweaty, I had those salt deposits all over my face and neck. I was feeling grateful for my hydration bladder that day!

Long-ish drive, but worth it.

I think you’d like watching, Midwest. Incredible athletes. Sounds like a beautiful hike. I’ve been using Endurolytes in this weather.

Saturday I ran a relatively relaxed 7.4 miles out in the country. Gentle rolling hills. Boot camp this morning, full body conditioning.

The supermarkets in my area have the CrossFit games promotions going on for the huge parties folks will be throwing.

^^^ Is this akin to Christmas in July? Super Bowl in August?!!!

I need to get my Evites out. I’m sure people would be equally excited about watching the Boston Marathon.
