@Midwest67 Here’s a small marketplace for programming. They have starter programs, women’s programs, cancer survivor programs, firefighter programs, football programs, etc. with different price points. Just an FYI.
You can get free programming here, which is a well-known program called Catalyst, but they focus on Oly lifting. But there are bazillions of free and paid programs out there.
I’m affiliated with none. But I occasionally like to try different/supplementary programs to CF, since it omits movements/exercises that I feel are important). And because I’ve got “Exercise ADD.”
Whoa! A big thumbs up! I think I said you could/would get your DL to the mid-200’s many pages back. You’re going to prove me right.
Since I’ve added Glute Ham Raises to my weekly routine, my hammies have grown. What a difference! I’m doing front squats and DL’s tonight, so I’m curious if I’ll see any difference.
I don’t use wraps. They seem like a lot of work to use them.
@mom60. Not to alarm you but “rock hard”, painful, calves is not normal and can be a sign of a venous clot. Not typical with just running and lactic build up. Might want to rule that out before PT.
Didn’t know this thread was here and boy do I ever need this. Had knee surgery and just ended PT and now it’s time to get back. I did P90x and their newer ones like 5 years ago and was in the best shape of my life just because I was doing something daily.
My son has been doing Keto for 2.5 months and Looks and feels great. No sugar cravings. No stomach and lost like 35 lbs or more. Had to buy lots of new clothes on break. Once this year is up I am making him get blood work and see if anything negative. Been talking to him about converting to something more sustainable also.
Congratulations, @Midwest67! I can’t wait to hear which direction you head with lifting. 200# is incredible. I wish I had your problem with too few calories.
After a rest day Tuesday, I’ve spent some time on the treadmill and in Pilates class, mainly due to weather. This morning I managed a run outdoors - 10k - that felt pretty good. Planning on running again tomorrow (we’ll see if the weather holds) and mat class. I just ate a gigantic lunch so I need to get that whole eating thing in check.
@sushiritto… Thx… I used to run almost daily but just have done some treadmill work in PT which I hate. Today is a goner but might do some bicycling indoors which I might need to change to for winter. Might get 3-6 inches tomorrow. My daughter’s in California looking at a college yesterday for grad school but today through Monday is going hiking /camping… Jealous.
Does running marathons make people healthier? Or are people that want to run marathons more likely to be in good health? It seems like it would be hard to know.
I hear from good sources that CA is a nice place to live.
I gotta get my running mileage up in 2020. I have a 7-mile fun run scheduled for a week from Sunday in the SF Presidio just to see how I’ll feel for a 1/2 in the future.
I’m not recommending you @sabaray do this – as I seem to remember you don’t eat meat or don’t eat much meat? – but I’ve found eating so much animal protein each day is high satiety.
Also, with eating many of the same foods day in and day out, I had become accustomed to reserving some “space” calorie-wise for beer at the end of the day.
Thank you for sharing the programming links. I’m not going to click because I have the sense that at this early intermediate stage I’m at high risk for paralysis-by-analysis and also susceptible to program-hopping.
Simple and consistent has been working, so I’m aiming to have the next step be very similar to what I’ve been doing (four day split). I’ll be switching it up to heavy and light days and incorporating a heavy top set with back-off sets.
We’ll see! My legal pad has an awful lot of notes!
I am not interested in competing. I would like to get even stronger and post more PRs. On the other hand, I’d like to keep open the option to fall back to a less stressful 2 day a week program. In other words, this is never going to be a serious hobby or obsession.
The important thing (for me) is to stick with it to the end of my days. It’s not even been a year! I know people get burnt out.
I think some of it depends on what level of competitiveness you’re at. I see some very overweight people with significant health conditions running longer distances - I would think they want to improve their general health. I think many people think you will lose weight training for a marathon - I have found the opposite to be true. I think if you’re running a 3:30 marathon or faster you were already in pretty good health, barring some lurking medical issue.
@Midwest67 , I think I just need to look at my caloric needs overall. My lunch today was a grilled “reuben” - hoisin marinated grilled tofu with swiss cheese and kimchi. My day got off to a terrible start with an unplanned vet visit for Sabapuppy, off to work with no planned lunch, this just sounded good. You’re right, I don’t eat a lot of meat and I don’t see that changing. I really need to plan better.
@sabaray Your lunch sounds delish! I hope you and Sabapup are having a better day today!
We are having very high winds today here in Chicagoland. Our older dog gets anxious when the wind is making unusual noises. He woke me up several times last night and it reminded me of having a baby! Didn’t like it then. Don’t like it now.
My 12 weeks to 13.1 miles training started today with lots of people showing up. The slowest group was supposed to be those who run in the 11-12 minute range, but that was clearly an overestimate of the crowd. I can run that speed and ended up in the front of the middle of the pack! The rest of the middle and a lot of others were behind me. There is a small group of people who are quite fast (mostly much younger than me). I figure it will sort itself out, but I just hope the people at the back don’t get discouraged and drop out. This is for a smaller, local race and the time limit is very generous so it is a good first half marathon for a lot of folks (like me). I like to see everyone out there running and walking regardless of pace.
Yay, @FallGirl! Can’t wait to hear about your first half!
Everyone is having a better day today! The high winds are headed our way - along with some intense thunderstorms and I am not looking forward to them. It’s been in the 60’s here today - this morning I ran in shorts! Managed a little over 4.5 miles and felt good after the 10k yesterday, so that’s a plus. Pilates mat this morning which was tough but I always feel so much better when it’s over.
Today marks the completion of the 12 week base training plan I started back in October. Only one week was I short on mileage and I was “over” on 3 weeks. I think I’m where I need to be.
LOL - It took me a very long time to get under a 12 minute mile, and usually it’s a bit over… 5k around 38min. (or slower if hot or winnnnnndy like today!) I actually log my runs by kilometer, to get a pace reading from mapmyrun every .1k (while listening to podcast).
I looked at my mapmyrun “lifetime” running total this week. I’ve been logging since April 2017, at the end of my couch-2-5k class started a few months earlier. I ran 246 times (usually 5k), total of 1178K . In the max month Aug 2017, 100k. DD suggests I do something special for Run #250.
I’m not big on formal running events (I’ve done several but I don’t thrive on them). But I like to do my own “novelty” runs.
Some examples:
I always run on National Running Day (June 6th?)
When our town has it’s annual marathon I am a course marshall and then afterwards run 2.6 in honor of those who ran 26!
On my birthday I run my age (this year 60 so 6.0 miles)
I like to pick a destination to run to. Like a library where I know I can run in and get a drink or run to a water feature (like a local river view).
And I have used RunKeeper from the start and always set 6 month goals - I like that it gives me feedback on my progress nearly every exercise session - I currently have 6 month goals for running, purposeful walking and cycling.
^^Kudos to you because if your snow was anything like ours (heavy due to snow +freezing rain + rain) each shovel was a BIG effort. I only did about 1/2 your time worth, but yes, good upper body workout!
Way to go on the driveway cleanup, @Midwest67 ! Functional fitness for the win. I’d say you more than earned that filet!
Since midweek our forecast was for snow and freezing rain today. We got a trace of snow and some intermittent sleet and freezing rain but nothing too terrible, fortunately. Just enough to make the day inconvenient, shall we say? I did not run today - I didn’t want to get up at 4 am just to be faced with icy conditions. Went to a mat class and will run tomorrow.
