It was somewhat slippery here, so I went with being safe and skipped this morning’s 5 mile training run. I did put in 3 miles on the treadmill and also rowed. Also have plans to do a 5 mile run on Monday with a bunch of friends, some of whom also skipped today’s run.

@Midwest67 Be careful. You may be becoming a CrossFitter without knowing it. :smiley:

How’s the elbow feeling? Are you back to doing pull-ups again?

@FallGirl running and rowing, that’s awesome. Rowing is definitely a great full body workout.

It’s been “freezing” here too, getting down to high 30’s first thing in the morning. I’ve been doing my running on the treadmill too. I’m a wimp.

I recently jettisoned a supplementary program and picked up a new/old one. I noticed that my top end strength has declined slightly, though that’s probably partly due to losing about 5 lbs too. So, I’ve gone back to the Cal Stength program 3 days week which I’ll layer on to my 5-day/week CF program.

@sushiritto

Ha! I’m way too lazy to ever be a CFer!

Yes, I just started chins again last week after taking a month off.

Neutral grip this time around. I had to use bands because I’ve detrained. Friday I was able to do four sets of 2 unassisted.

Both elbows are still irritated with the right one more so (I’m right handed).

It’s not at the high level of pain before, but it’s still no fun to have achy parts.

One of my podcasts mentioned how older lifters can feel beat up — not because the muscles hurt but bc the connective tissues are just not what they used to be. Hmmmm…that sounds familiar.

I have not gotten around to icing it. I could rest it some more. I could try elbow sleeves. I could stick with bands to take some weight off. IDK! I don’t really want to take Advil every day.

I’ve noticed I get aches and pains during the night. I’ll wake up and need to change positions bc something is achy.

I’m only 56! O.O

No hiking today for me! It’s five degrees!

It’s no fun hiking on frozen uneven ground — you know when the footprints in the snow on the trail have frozen rock hard. Boo!

Low forties and sunshine today! I little over 5 on a challenging route, felt really good. I joined an Australian relief run on Strava and made a contribution so I could feel good about my badge.

@Midwest67, I’m 56 too. I have found that tart cherry juice seems to help with aches and pains. I buy a concentrate and take a tablespoon (like medicine) after a particularly strenuous run. I also take turmeric daily (1000 mg) and that seems to help with inflammation. I wouldn’t hike in 5 degree weather either but I think your colder weather is headed our way.

@Midwest67. 58 here… Lol… Use something to stand on and do assisted chins. It really works great and easier on the joint but you do get the muscles working without straining yourself which can lead to injury. FYI

@Knowsstuff

Yes, I’ve got bands & I use them.

I also have a goal of 5 unassisted chins.

:slight_smile:

I waited until the early afternoon for an outside run. Cloudy and low 50’s. Just my 5K route. And wore sweats and a parka. Kidding about the parka.

Friday and Saturday went very well. My gym got a new/used treadmill, but it wasn’t set up yet. Cardio isn’t a featured item at my gym which is fine by me. Just means no waiting for equipment.

I always feel beat up, but that’s just strenuous exercise I think. Age too, I’m sure. I have to try tart cherry juice concentrate. I actually bought the juice drink, a while back but it sits in my fridge unused. I forgot to check the sugar content. Oops!

The concentrate I buy is not low in sugar - 19 grams per ounce. However, it’s nothing but tart cherries. I feel better about that occasionally than Advil regularly.

Enjoying football today for a change.

@Midwest67. Trust me. Do it assisted for awhile. In no time you will be doing 10. It really does help. I have a bar that I can reach and have a very low platform to stand on and barely use my legs to get over the bar. You will definitely feel it if you do it correctly. In a few weeks you will see your unassisted ones creep up.

So this weekend I had a great work out and I am really sore.

It’s called the Bed Bug workout. ?.

It’s when your daughter that you just dropped off at college 2 hours away calls you when you just get back home and sends you a picture of a bedbug she see’s in her bed at 10:00 pm.

The next two days you go there and put like 25 bags of clothes in bags. Lug them down 3 very long flights of steep stars. Load and unload washers and dryers. Use new bags and bending over a lot to rebag. Then walk back up the stairs. For 2 days straight. (exterminator coming tomorrow)

If I added push up and some ab work, I would of had a great workout… Lol ?. ?

Honestly, I am so sore like everywhere…

Interesting study on fasting and binge eating. Real, peer reviewed science. Transparent about the limitations of the study as well as the data driven conclusion that fasting can significantly be a factor in binge eating, particularly with young women. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2850570/?fbclid=IwAR3piw1yFIU8t7NbmRxUTL4vwID1lYNFpOM4_WRe5vvpBiZT3W8KiRvkdqQ

@Knowsstuff

I hope to skip that kind of workout! (the bed bug workout)

I hope the cycle gets broken!

I can see how fasting for 24 hour periods could lead to binge eating. This was not an uncommon behavior when I was in college among my peers - before we knew any better. While the article is a little dense for laypeople like me, this fasting behavior seems to differ from the intermittent fasting we’ve discussed here.

Strava tells me that 1/19 was “Quitter’s Day” - according to their data, the day most people are likely to abandon New Years’ resolutions. How is everyone doing? I haven’t done so well with my yoga goals for the year, but I did get to the gym for some cross-training today.

”…In no time you will be doing 10…”

I appreciate the encouragement!

For now, I’ll settle for a 2020 goal of sets of 5 unassisted.

I’m female. 56. And it took a LOT of work to get to ONE unassisted.

4 was my PR before the elbow flare-up.

@Midwest67. Exterminator is there now… Lol ?.. I am still sore… Haha… Going to try to get that Lactic acid pushed out today.

I’m still doing Dry January. So far, so good.

I ordered a case of NA beer from Athletic Brewing Company. It’s the very best NA beer(s) I’ve tried.

It’s nice to have something to “close out the day” with — its been my habit for awhile.

I had a Heineken Zero last night, and did not feel deprived bc it was NA.

Not sure what my goal will be when January is over!

@Sabaray I’m doing well with my goals. Keeping up with training for the half and rowing 3x/week. Really enjoying eating fewer processed foods even though it is more meal planning/cooking for me. H is having a knee replacement tomorrow which means I’ll be taking over even more of the cooking for awhile, but that’s OK as it gives me more control.

Found a good motivator for winter runs - do not look at the forecast until you have already created an outdoor running event and posted it. I did this on Saturday and then realized that at 8 AM today it would be 23 degrees and windchill feels like 9 degrees. Seriously I was driving to the meet up place hoping no one would show and I would be off the hook. Didn’t happen. Some people bailed but a total of 10 showed up. So, we ran our 5 mile training run. It was actually great, and fun. Thankful for my running buddies.

@FallGirl, hope your H’s knee replacement goes well, I’m sure that’s in Mr. Sabaray’s future.

Rowing really seems to be picking up in popularity again. I’m in a college alumni group where we share our fitness goals and workouts and there are several folks who use rowing as a cross training exercise. Some actual rowers too!

It has been in the teens here in the am. That’s just too cold for me - you’re a lot tougher than I am!

Thanks for the NA beer recommendations, @Midwest67. Good observation that it’s just habit. I’ve been drinking these Pellegrino flavored waters lately that I am really enjoying. I was tempted to have a beer during the games yesterday but then reminded myself it was just habit and I would enjoy fizzy water just as much.

@sabaray

I love fizzy drinks!

Re: Athletic Brewing Co. I like the Run Wild IPA and All Out Coffee Stout. I tried the Upside Dawn Golden Ale and did not like that one. I have not tried the others (yet!).

@FallGirl

That’s a great story about gently forcing some accountability and follow-thru. I have been in similar shoes, leading a hike with awful weather and kinda sorta hoping no one else will show. Of course, someone shows, and of course, the hike is enjoyable.

@Midwest67 I’ve been lurking for a long while here, and I’ve loved following your pull-up progress. They are not a natural exercise for most of us ladies. I am good at them now - for an aging lady - but I tell people it took me 10 YEARS to get to 1. I think working on the negatives it what finally got it done for me.

I’ve loved watching your progress, but I’m at the opposite end of the spectrum. I’ve been lifting for over 30 years. I feel like I have to work so hard just to maintain status quo. And meanwhile my teen/college boys get stronger just by waking up in the morning. So jealous!

I’ve lifted by myself for pretty much all my life. But a couple of years ago, while depressed waiting for an MRI for a torn meniscus, my friend got me to join her beachbody online group. I am so glad I did. I’ve found that I really enjoy working out to a video (downloaded to my phone and done in my gym.) it’s so much easier to push myself when someone tells me what to do. lol. And it has a wide range of programs. Some standard lifting like I’m used to, and some that push me out of my comfort zone.

Currently, I’m in week 3 of P90X. I did it before maybe 18 months ago. I’m hoping to get those one arm push-ups this time!
