Difference between standardized tests (SAT and ACT)...?

Hey guys,

I am approaching the time when most sophomores and juniors in high school begin to take the ACT and SAT for the college application process. I have this question asked multiple times on CC in the Prep School forum and I was wondering: What is the difference between the ACT and the SAT? Do more colleges accept the SAT than the ACT or is it about the same? What type of person would do better (subject wise) on the SAT vs. the ACT and vise-versa?

I know that many people who are starting to think about college and standardized testing have these questions so hopefully this thread can help some people out (including me!). Thanks so much you guys:)

There is no US university that only accepts one and not the other.

I’m not sure one can make a sweeping generalization. Some students do better on one vs. the other, but I’m not sure there is any commonality. Review the differences:

Take a practice test for each, and then decide. Good luck.

Have you asked the college counselors at Berkshire?

All schools accept SAT or ACT. There are regional/HS school differences with preference for one test over the other. The best way to see which one works best is for him/her to take some practice tests. Mine took each one once. If your child may be an NMSF s/he will need SAT to qualify for NMF.

The SAT gives you more time, but the questions are harder. The ACT is a time crunch, barely any time to think about your answer, but the questions are more straightforward. Definitely take practice tests to see which one you feel most comfortable with. It isn’t necessary to do both unless your school requires it. Just get a really good score in one test.
