hi i have never applied to 4 year colleges ever before
so i’m wondering if there’s any difference between admittance letter and rejection letter

i’ve heard from somewhere that you’d know right away if you’ve been admitted or not cuz you’d get this big package full of brochures right on your door if you’re admitted, and that you’d get a regular sized envelope with a brief message if you’re rejected.

is that true?

is there any way of knowing right away if you’ve been admitted or not even before opening your decision letter?

and another question, does johns hopkins send out their decisions by email?

Sometimes the acceptance letter is a thin envelope, followed by housing information, so don’t rule it out if you get thin envelopes and not fat ones. The first acceptance letter I got was in the regular mail so I’m not too sure that they put it right on your door.

Some schools send their acceptance letters in thin envelopes as well, though most do not. Of course, I got several rejection letters and I could tell they were rejections before opening them. Thin, almost discreet envelopes. Man, my hopes plummeted when I saw a thin letter from my 1st choice school.

And I don’t remember if JHU sends decisions by mail or not, I don’t remember if I got a rejection letter from them or whether I just checked online. Sorry. And good luck.

I got a fat envelope from UCR that said “Congratulations” but it came so far after my online acceptance (a month+) that it really wouldn’t matter what size the envelope was, I don’t think.

Many send fat envelopes with housing and other info with acceptance letter; however, many simply send a a one page letter and then send rest of stuff later. Today, however, the debate over the size of the letter has generally become irrelevant because you will learn of the decision from most colleges on-line or through email before any envelope arrives.

If you really need to know what to expect, you could always ask people who have applied there and been accepted in past years. Some colleges always send acceptances in huge, completely nondiscreet envelopes with the words CONGRATULATIONS written all over it. For instance, two of my friends have already gotten into a school that I’m still waiting for a decision from, and then said that the envelope was huge and blue. So if I just get a small little envelope, then it’s obviously a rejection.

I just an acceptance from USC 2 weeks ago. It came in a huge envelope, sent by DHL… A little over the edge, I must say… It said “Welcome to the Trojan Family” Yeah, definately not discreet, but it was nice because it wasn’t super nerve wracking to open it. Like everyone has said, it really depends on the school. I’m still waiting for one from Stanford… Anyone know what kind of letter they send??

Stanford sends out a huge envelope that has “Congratulations!” written on the outside so you pretty much know right away. The UCs don’t send out reject letters. You find out if you’ve been rejected only through the website. They send admit letters through mail though.

Don’t get too discouraged though when you get a small letter. If it’s before the indicated date colleges say they’ll announce decisions, you might be getting a THIN letter saying you’re accepted and to look for your packet in the mail. That has happened to me 2 times so far. Be wary of that.
