Here is a short Reddit thread about what may be expected of job applicants in Germany: Reddit - Dive into anything
More generally, what kind of things are commonly asked of job applicants in various regions or industries that are not typically asked (or may be illegal or too close to illegal to ask) in other regions or industries?
For example, in the US, is the practice of asking college graduate applicants for their high school SAT scores mainly in certain industries?
I interviewed for many years where I worked, and I honestly didn’t care about the high school anything. It was all about college….and beyond.
No head shots. But I do remember friends who had these on their resumes back in the Stone Age. Anyone else remember these as the “background” on the resume page? I do!
When I interviewed for a position at a major benefits consulting firm, I was asked for my SAT scores. It was a communications position, and I got a perfect score on their editing screening, but they were very impressed by my math score (which in CC land was nothing to write home about). Apparently it was competitive with their actuarial analyst candidates.
As it turned out, I did a lot of communications AND a lot of actuarial-adjacent work. It worked out just fine. Had we stayed in Philadelphia, I would have been there for the rest of my career. Loved the people and the place.
My ds was asked about his SAT score when he applied for an MBB consulting summer internship in the fall of 2016 for the summer of 2017. I think it was only the math score they asked for - I can’t recall. But, yes - in some industries it’s a thing.
I’m reviewing resumes of candidates for a job in my dept now - for the first time (we’ve done several recruitments over the years) someone included a photograph. It was surprising - but we still choose to interview them as resume was otherwise solid.
When my daughter was graduating college and a job interview asked her what her SAT score was, she honestly couldn’t remember. It was only that one who asked, not sure which company it was. Also, nobody has ever asked for her college transcript (even when she was just graduating). She is in analytics now and was in logistics before this. Has applied to jobs in many industries - tech, medical, ecommerce, banking/insurance, etc.
Many applicants today are not including address or location on their resume, because they feel they can work from home anywhere.
I have been in Accounting for small to mid-sized companies for 20+ years. While I don’t usually hire kids right out school I have done so in a few instances. I would never ask about SAT scores. I would not really be that interested in GPA. Now tell me you passed the CPA exam and I would be impressed.
But most of the companies I have worked for are not in the market for the best/brightest as there usually is not a quick path to move up in the company and we are not paying top dollar. On the other hand we are not requiring a crazy amount of hours either.
