Is there any difference between the focus of a counselor’s recommendation and that of a teacher recommendation?

Yes. The teacher’s focus is on you as a student. The counselor’s focus is on your record as it relates to the offerings of the school and the rest of the student body. The counselor’s recommendation gives context to your school experience - did you take the hardest classes? What classes are offered? What’s your rank (if your school ranks)? How is the GPA calculated?

That’s why you can get a decent counselor’s recommendation from a counselor you’ve met twice. But you should ask a teacher who really knows you for a teacher’s recommendation.

How about your ECs? Should you ask your counselor to write about those as well?
