I was checking the prices of flight and noticed that Southwest and US Airways have the same prices. Is there any difference between these two airlines? Does US Airways have more room than Southwest?

Yes, there are a lot of differences between the two airlines, one of the most relevant (to many people) being that Southwest does not charge for the first two checked bags. There are many more differences, but baggage and seat selection (look at Southwest’s website for more info) are the ones people talk about a lot.

Southwest’s seats are also generally very comfortable, and they give you snacks/sodas on almost every flight while many other airlines charge for a snack box.

Southwest doesn’t fly coast-to-coast directly, so you’ll have a connection if you’re going pretty far.

and you board in groups on southwest, meaning you can grab any seat you want instead of being limited to seat 11A or whatever when you print out your ticket.

Avoid Useless Airways, unless you’re already a frequent flyer on United, US Air or Continental (or any of the 23 other Star Alliance member carriers), or you can fly nonstop.

US Airways’ legroom depends on the plane type. If you’re on one of their international A330s, there’s more legroom. On the domestic planes, legroom is a bit less on US Air, but the difference is negligible.

Btw US Airways doesn’t fly coast to coast either, unless you’re flying to/from PHL or CLT. The advantage of US Airways is that god forbid something goes wrong, US will reaccommodate you on UA or CO because the three have reciprocal agreements. Southwest will only rebook you on Southwest.

US charges you for bags, but WN will let you fly with the first two checked bags for free. US will however waive the bag fee for elite flyers on UA, US or CO (or any of the other *A carriers).

Nobody serves food on board, so that’s really a nonissue at this point.

Do not fly US Airways. Southwest rarely loses luggage and will make your flight pretty pleasant. US Airways has rude employees in Philadelphia/New York and repeatedly delays flights (Both ways I was delayed 8 hours. EIGHT. HOURS.) whereas Southwest arrives/departs on time within a few minutes. Free drinks and snacks are great, plus you get two carry-on items and free checked luggage and your pick of seats!

I <3 Southwest, the end.

US Airways sucks, Southwest doesn’t.

Because there’s no checked bag fees or assigned seating, Southwest seems better than the other major airlines ie Continental, US, and American.

Unfortunately, part of their low-cost flying includes avoiding the large airports at many major cities and instead flying to smaller airports. And excluding many areas of the North. Depending on what airport is closer to your house, it may be an extra hassle. But if it works out for you, great.

well the North can suck it

although I do admit it infuriated me that jetBlue didn’t serve DCA for the longest time (they plan on servicing it at some point in the future though, so I’m not mad anymore).

Southwest just came to Minneapolis/St. Paul International last year so it looks like they are expanding northward. I’m about as far north as it gets.

If you dont call 24 hours ahead of time you won’t get a good seat on southwest airlines. Then you have to get there extra early to wait in ine a/b/c. I like us air, I fly them a lot. They are usually early for most of their arivals.

Peacelovemusic, there’s no need to call Southwest. You just get your boarding pass online 24 hours before your flight, and getting there early means nothing if they haven’t started asking people to line up. Plus, now A/B/C is divvied up into 60 places per section, so the first person has A1, the next A2, and so on.

Double plus, the staff will be 10x nicer. I was snapped at several times by US Air employees–maybe they thought I wasn’t worthy of customer service when I was an unaccompanied minor with a flight delayed by 7 to 8 hours? They refused to even tell me why it was delayed so long.

You’d think they’d be nicer employees considering their employer has filed bankruptcy a few times and plenty of people would kill to have a job… oh wait they’re probably union.

Probably the only redeemable thing about US Airways is Captain Sully (the pilot of that plane that crashed into the Hudson River with no fatalities).

US Airways has first class. WN doesn’t. WN operates a single aircraft type (B737) while US Airways operates a variety of aircraft.

Futurenyustudent, you forgot to add US Airway’s hub at PHX. Their corporate office is also located in Phoenix,AZ as well.

Some of you mentioned the delays that US Airways has but not every delay is their fault. If you took flights out of EWR, JFK, LGA, or PHL then don’t blame US Air. Most flights out of these airports have delays due to heavy air traffic in which causes the control tower to delay flights.

I’m biased on this since I’m an elite flier for Asiana who is a partner of the Star Alliance. There are pros and cons of both airlines.

The negatives of US Airways that I can think of include:
-Checked baggage fee for non-elite fliers.
-No free food except for the the free non-alcoholic beverage when sitting in Economy.
-There are a good # of rude employees but every company has these awful people so not really a legit negative.
-Price of tickets can be more expensive than Southwest’s at times.

There are more positives for US Airways than Southwest:
-Have International flights
-Bigger airline which allows more flights out of the bigger airports
-Partner of the Star Alliance which enables you to have lounge access, priority waitlist for upgrades of standbys on partner airlines.
-Award tickets on Star Alliance partner airlines
-Ability to take a flight on a partner airlines flight when your original flight is cancelled.

To be honest, if your taking a good amount of flights or miles then go with US Airways. Once you achieve elite status then you have the best perks when flying which is the best. Southwest isn’t in any alliance which sucks and you can’t fly with the miles you saved for a trip to Europe, Asia, etc.

southwest is awesome and very cheap, never flown us airways but i highly recommend southwest

Thanks for the all comments. I’ve always flown Southwest. Now I know I will just stick with them.

Well Southwest doesn’t charge bags so fly with them unless you don’t have any bags to check in. In that case, choose the cheaper one (or more convenient one).

We don’t fly that much but we took Southwest on our last trip and were quite pleased with it. I used to fly a lot more in the past and really didn’t care for United, Delta, and US Air. Wife just took Singapore Airlines for a flight. Singapore Airlines has first-rate service. They’re not domestic though.

there are so few airlines left, of those left southwest is on the high end for overall quality of experience (IMO)
