Difficult & significant literature suggestions

Hi all. Let’s start a compilation of ratings for difficult & significant (as in a must-read in order to achieve a meaningful and fulfilling life  ) literature. The goal of this thread will be to help students select books to read for SAT & AP English preparation and adults for self-improvement in general.

Simply suggest one or several book(s) and author and add it to the list. Or, add 1 in parenthesis to each existing book suggestion that you second.

Example:

Finnegan’s Wake by James Joyce (2)
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (1)
Walden by Thoreau (5)

I’ll start:

Finnegan’s Wake by James Joyce (1)
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (1)
Walden by Henry Thoreau (1)
Sound and Fury by William Faulkner (1)

Please copy and paste list.
