I am looking for a digital camera (as a present for a very special person). It needs to be small and compact but with really good resolution, and I would like it to have capabilities to shoot video as well (but the quality of the pictures is more important).

Does anyone have one or recently purchased one that they really love? I really want it to be an excellent gift!

I’ve read good things about Samsung SL420, but I have had no personal experience with it.

Canon “Power Shot” SX110 IS is what I bought for my daughter a year and a half ago for a trip to London. 9.0 megapixels, 10X optical zoom. Easy to use, great photos. It is not teeny (purse size rather than pocket size) but a whole lot smaller than my own camera.

It uses AA batteries, rather than the rechargeable type. For her, that was what we wanted, and it works out well. (But be sure to use those made for electronics.)

I wholeheartedly agree with the Canon SD-xxxx (whatever the numbers may be) series if you want something that takes great photos yet is easily portable. Bought one for D2 and liked hers so much that we bought one for ourselves.

S received a samsung last year for xmas and now HATES it. He is looking for a replacement, and is looking at the Canon SD series vs the Sony xx-290. Anyone have any experience with the Sony?

Canon SD1200 pixel level looks like it’s a little bit upgraded from my CanonSD1100. Other than that, the two are still very similar. I just checked on Amazon and the Canon SD1100 is indeed listed at a much higher price. There doesn’t seem to be a logical explanation for this—when I bought it, I paid less than $200 so for it to be listed for over $300 is ridiculous.

If anyone in my family were in the market for a digital camera, I wouldn’t have any hesitation in recommending the Canon SD1200 based on my experience with the older model (SD 1100).

I just checked the Dell website and they are offering the Canon SD1200 for $179

I just bought a Canon SD 1200. Consumer Reports gave it a high rating. I bought it at Costco for $179 and it included a case and a memory card. CR gave Best Buy status to two Kodak models, EasyShareC160 and M320 but I have not been fond of the Kodaks we have owned.

The Canon SD1200 with extra battery and case will be on sale the day after Thanksgiving for $149.99 at Best Buy according to the black Friday ads.
edit: Also at Office Depot

I have a Canon SD something or other and it’s been great. It has a bigger lens than the ultracompacts and good optics give you better quality. More megapixels is nice but optics give you more signal to work with. I can get addon lenses for mine for telephoto, wide-angle and super closeup. I should take a look at the 1200 - haven’t shopped for cameras in a long time.

My D has a Canon SD 1000 and she really has taken some great shots with it. ( she also has a Nikon digital SLR and a Canon AE SLR)
I had an Canon A570 is which took AA batteries, but I needed something that took better closeups so I gave it to the other D, and I bought a Canon SX200 IS at Costco which I like.

It is a little expensive for a gift for a friend though- at least for my budget.

It is hard to pick out a camera for someone else, cause the way that it feels in your hands & what features you want is personal preference.

My mistake, I bought an A series camera (maybe the 710). It has better optics than the smaller cameras.

I generally do not carry it around. I have a VGA camera in my cell phone which gets used more for impromptu pictures. The Canon does take great pictures and runs off AA batteries (I use NiMH) but the batteries do not last as long as I’d like them to and I always carry an extra set. If I need more reliability in power, I bring along alkaline batteries. There’s always the issue of 1.2 volts vs the required 1.5 volts.

On trips, I just bring a mini-AA/AAA charger and charge every night which takes care of most battery issues. I think that I’d want even better optics for my next camera. In this case, it might just make more sense to get a telephoto lens.
