Actually she might be able to get something. Her stepfather has a child of his own in college. Attending much less expensive college than D1 hopes for, I think.

Is your D’s stepfather the custodial parent for that child in college? Or is that child filling out FAFSA using another parent as custodial?

Anyway, the FAFSA only school likely doesn’t meet need, so even if her EFC splits to $25k, she may not get a dime of free money. She (or you) needs to run the NPC at that school putting in info such as $150k (or whatever) income and 2 in college (if that other child is a member of that household).

Wouldn’t that usually be because the person doing the NPC does not include the NCP’s income and assets, or underestimates them (perhaps by not knowing about the NCP’s new spouse’s income and assets)?

Stepfather is the custodial parent, so D1 would not be the only college student in the household partaking of the EFC. From what I’ve heard D1’s mother is pretty much the same as his previous two wives were with regard to creditworthiness, character, reliability, etc.

So, can you run the FAFSA-only school’s NPC and put in that 2 will be in college and the income is $150k (or whatever you think it is). That should give you some idea of what your D’s costs will be.
