Dillo Day

This is probably a stupid question, but…What is the origin of Dillo Day? According to Wikipedia, it has its roots in May Day, but also on a day in 1972 when some students from Texas held a small celebration in honor of the armadillo. I don’t really see how these two things are related (and also, why an armadillo?). Don’t get me wrong, I’m really excited for tomorrow, but it’s kind of bewildering not knowing exactly what we’re celebrating. :P

Another question…could any upperclassmen tell me how bad the drinking/drugs is going to be? Given all the warnings we’ve been getting through e-mails and signs and such, I’m guessing it’s been a pretty big issue in the past. I have a younger sibling visiting me this weekend (not because it’s Dillo Day, but just because it’s the only weekend that worked for both of us). I’d like to expose her to as little of the drinking as possible. Is this going to be hard? Is the drinking worse at night than during the day, or should I expect to be running into drunk people all around campus, all day? Are there any particular places I should avoid taking my sibling?

Thanks a million!

My first dillo day too. According to some of the upperclassmen, drinking/drugs are everywhere, but they don’t really consider that an “issue”…

I point you to the Daily’s “Poll in Norris” from a couple weeks ago:

[The Daily Northwestern - Poll in Norris](http://www.dailynorthwestern.com/poll-in-norris-1.2270137)

However, the people I’ve talked to are pretty seasoned alcoholics and potheads (who were actually surprised that I wouldn’t be drinking), so perhaps you’ll be fine.

No, there will be drunk people everywhere. Deal with it, honestly- its part of college life on every campus. To completely avoid them, go to Chicago.

Wow, that poll is discouraging. :(

Why? ~1/4 students polled will be completely sober, which for the Saturday immediately after the last day of classes of the year, is pretty good. Add in the carnival atmosphere and mega-concert, I’m impressed its that high for “sober”. And 60% will be drinking responsibly or sober. That’s not bad.

This wasn’t the last week of classes for everyone. But it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Thanks for the responses, arbiter and sirsteveh.
