Diplomatic negotiation strategies needed-DS juggling job offer & upcoming interviews

Update:

DS has next interview tomorrow and 2 more next week. The co who made him the offer asked when they could expect a response form him. He expressed his appreciation and said he’d get back to them by the end of next week (not sure exactly how it was worded but it was very diplomatic). I think he will be ok. Thanks for all the feedback, and stay tuned. Hopefully if there is a choice he’ll have a clear sense of which is the best “fit”. I guess “fit” surpasses college!

I would wait with any decision until having written offer in his hands. There are could be specific dates / procedures included. I believe, it is a good idea at this point to pursue all other opportunities. Be positive about every single one of them. You do not know how it will play at the end. I know how he feels, I have changed jobs 8 times, sometime with multiple offers and yes, sometime making wrong decisions that I paid dearly for. Nothing is guaranteed, but it is important to look positively and learn from mistakes instead of grinding yourself down and move on. At the end, sooner or later, it workes for the best for positive hard working people. The best luck!

Thanks. He has 2 more to go. The one with the offer on the table knows he has a few irons in the fire (they called today after his interview, in fact). Todays co said they will finish their interviews next Fri. It will be tight.

Good luck to you S, Jym. It is nice to go on interviews with an offer in your pocket though.

Thanks, cartera. I hope he has choices too. He really likes yesterday’s co- very different from the first, which he likes, but for a different reason

Today’s company will let him know “by Friday”. Last week’s company will let him know Friday afternoon (he has to give them a salary number as well-- will be doing that today). Current offer would like an answer by the end of the week!! Eeek. Friday will be an interesting day (and he has another 2 day visit/interview tomorrow/Weds, though this last upcoming opportunity is less of a fit for him and his interests. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to handle Friday (that doesn’t involve a stiff drink, LOL)

^ … it is great he will has so many options! … but the timing will not be great. The only advice I have is to weigh the possible options before he hears the actual offer. What if the offer is 10% higher or lower? or if it is the other location? or has the other boss? He is not going to have a lot of time to consider his options so having a leg up on his possible decisions might help relieve some of the time crunch. (PS - and I’d also try to push the Friday folks to Monday … one work day for them and three days of muilling for him).

Thanks 3togo. We hope he’ll have a positive response from at least one more of the companies. But the one with the offer on the table will have been waiting for 2 weeks, and when they asked him when he would have a decision, he said the end of this week. I dont think he wants to push his luck. But this was the original topic of this thread! Tough to juggle and have time to think it all through. I do like your idea about weighing the pros and cons and the “what ifs”. Fortunately, they are all good (albeit different) opportunities.

jym626-late to this thread and no advice to give at this point, but just wanted to wish your DS good luck with the rest of the process!

Tell the previous cos to wait 1 week after the last company interviews. Its easy to find a BF/GF within a week, but its tougher to find something that you make your bucks. If the first companies balk-they are not professional enough. They too should be looking for the best fit.

yes, have a written offer, that is passed by HR.
DS had an offer from a very big CS company managers, many interview rounds, internships with this company but HR nixed it because ongoing hiring freeze and they had their quota for newly graduated MS’ers.

Keeping fingers crossed, jym, for the best “fit”.

Keep us posted!

Soo, tomorrow is the big day when all decisions should come in, and today his new Iphone comes in?? Bad day to chance having a phone with intermittent antenna functionality!! Bring on the duct tape (the current recommended fix)

I just saw this thread! Congrats to him and good luck tomorrow. Can’t wait to hear!

Thanks, MOWC. One of the opportunities is in the city you are currently visiting.
It feels like April 1 with all the RD admissions decisions coming in!

::ahem::

We didn’t get an update. Or are you all out celebrating?

LOL, teriwtt-

The HR person at the company whose offer he plans to accept was out of the office Friday. He hopes to iron out a few issues re: time off/vacation when he speaks to them tomorrow. I wanted to wait until it is all official to post.

He was getting messages/emails and calls up until after 6 pm Friday. He has 2 firm offers and a third that told him they had, after a multiple-hour discussion, decided that he was a close second for their position, but that if for any reason the offer they extended to their top candidate didn’t pan out, they would be back in touch- especially if they heard anything this weekend or early Monday. He thanked them, but told them he would be accepting the other offer, but plans to keep in touch with them.

As an aside-- the second offer he got on Friday told him he could have 2 weeks to respond.

Thanks to everyone for the front and back-channel inquiries and support. I will update as soon as the “I’s” are dotted and the “T’s” are crossed.

Congratulations. It’s a nice problem to have.

thanks, oldfort.
Will update when all is firm.

I just saw this thread. Yeah!!! Let us know how it ends up! :)
