Diplomatic negotiation strategies needed-DS juggling job offer & upcoming interviews

jym - congrats to your son! In addition to a job offer, it looks like he got a crash course in job offer negotiation startegies and passed it with flying colors. I hope he spends many happy years working for this place, gets promotions and other recognition for his achievements, and will not have to use his job offer juggling skills too often.

That is really sweet, BB. Thank you for your kind words. You too, anxiousmom-- thanks!

I would LOVE for him to stay with this company for a long time-- for selfish reasons-- its not far from us. But we will see where the future takes him. Time will tell.

UPDATE
DS was hoping to get a week off to honor his commitment with a volunteer organization that is scheduled in October. Company said they have some pretty tight policies about vacation accrual… so instead gave him one week unpaid leave plus an increase of almost 3% on their original base salary offer to more than cover the lost income for the unpaid week off!! Works for him!

He is accepting this offer. The relocation package is very generous as well. All good news. He will wait 'til all is in writing all the way around and then decline the offer. The other offer’s relocation package is modest-- not unreasonable but nowhere as generous as what he is getting from the employer he will be working for. And best news…he’ll be close to home!! Yay!!

Hey jym626-great news and congrats to your DS! Close to home with a great job offer-priceless! ;)

Absolutely! Thanks!

Younger s has decided he’ll stay with big brother when he comes home for holidays!

Great news - so glad to read the happy update!

oops- typo in post #63- will wait 'til all is finalized with the offer he is accepting and then decline the other offer.

And thanks, frazzled-- happy news here, and great to have everyone in the house employed (tho younger s’s internship will end in mid August…)

Excellent! Congrats! Go RICE!!

Thanks, MOWC!!
I told DS that his new employer is like Rice – very well respected in the industry, but no one has heard of them!!

Oh yes!!! Excellent news! I am so glad for him and for you. And would the volunteer opportunity have something to do with “borders”? :)

You are a smart lady, anxiousmom. Yes-- he is team lead for the project so wants to see it through and honor that commitment until they get another team lead from the professional community.

Great news - congrats! So good to read about such a positive result.

Thanks Cartera!
Next stop- apartment hunting. The company is in a great location-- for marrieds with kids. Not for singles. So there will be a long reverse commute, and traffic here stinks!! So decisions will need to be made about a balance of enjoyable living /lifestyle vs awful daily commute. Stay tuned!

Update:

Apartment lease signed today. Job starts in a week!
He found another young new hire who was looking for a roommate. They seem to have a lot in common, so rented a 2 br and will be able to commute together to/from work, which is a bit of a drive. Things are looking good.

Wow – just saw this thread. Congrats to your son, jym! Fantastic news!

did I miss something? did he accept offer #1 or offer #2?

Oops, sorry avoidingwork-
he accepted offer #1 and declined #2. Job#2 told him his materials would remain on file and he would have a job if he ever wanted it. Nice to have a perennial back-up!

And thanks, wjb! We had a big family dinner tonight, with the new roommate. He seems like a very nice fellow. BUT-- he is a snowboarder (from Colorado)-- and hasn’t broken anything yet! He’d better steer clear of THIS family!! Our broken bones might rub off on him!

Great news, congrats.

Now is when I wish we still had a minivan- that thing was great for fitting and hauling large items. DS is getting rid of some old furniture and needs to replace some (like a bed) soon.

IKEA  love their rolled up mattresses and flat boxes…
