Direct Patient Care Exposure Required for Medical School

Hello,

For medical school it is required that students have some form of direct patient interaction. I am thinking of volunteering at NY Methodist Hospital as a Health Literacy Volunteer, but I am not sure if this volunteer position counts as patient interaction. Here is a description of the volunteer position:

“Health Literacy volunteers work individually or in pairs to present health-related information in the waiting rooms of Outpatient Pediatrics, Outpatient Adult Medical, the Women’s Clinic and Infusion Center. Volunteers present to a group of patients as well as provide one-on-one consultations with waiting patients.”

Would medical school admissions count this volunteer position as direct patient exposure or as volunteer service?

According to the esteemed LizzyM: If you’re close enough to smell them [a patient] then it’s clinical experience.

Lol

Thank You.
