I saw another post here discussing directional schools and I had to look up what they were as I had never heard of these. According to the Urban dictionary they are any state-supported university in the United States whose name includes a compass direction. In NJ, we don’t even have a state -supported U with our state name in it.
By the definition I just posted, I’d have to say that in NJ, we don’t have any directional unis. Or do we?
Am I missing something?

Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey
New Jersey Institute of Technology
The College of New Jersey

But there are not any North/South/East/West New Jersey named universities. However, it is likely that some of the non-Rutgers state universities fulfill similar functions that the “directional” universities fulfill in other states.

UCB is right about those names, but directional is more a short-hand for schools that are not the flagship or specialized and more locally oriented (more likely picked by the student for proximity.)

None of those three would be characterized as directionals. Our other state schools tend to have names, not directions (maybe because we are a small state and there isn’t that much direction?) I notice that much of the Northeast doesn’t seem to follow that naming model, actually.

I think directionals equivalents in NJ would be more like William Paterson, Kean, Jersey City State, etc. To some extent Montclair, Rowan, Ramapo, Stockton, though each of those probably has a sizable non-local but still NJ resident population.

In CT, we have the state flagship, which is University of CT, but we also have Central, Southern, Western and Eastern Connecticut State Universities. Small state but lots of options.

UBC
You are right - Rutgers does have NJ in the title, but I guess I was thinking that we don’t have a University of NJ. Rather we have Rutgers U and you have to remember that it is in NJ.
I completely forgot about TCNJ and and NJIT!

I recognize that the non-Rutgers state unis would be like directional unis, but I was really wondering which schools t these would be. For such a small state, I think we have an amazingly large number of unis and colleges.

True, but we also have an awful lot of people!

Oh my yes. We sure do!
