<p>UCB is right about those names, but directional is more a short-hand for schools that are not the flagship or specialized and more locally oriented (more likely picked by the student for proximity.)</p>
<p>None of those three would be characterized as directionals. Our other state schools tend to have names, not directions (maybe because we are a small state and there isn’t that much direction?) I notice that much of the Northeast doesn’t seem to follow that naming model, actually.</p>
<p>I think directionals equivalents in NJ would be more like William Paterson, Kean, Jersey City State, etc. To some extent Montclair, Rowan, Ramapo, Stockton, though each of those probably has a sizable non-local but still NJ resident population. </p>
