I am trying to complete my fafsa and my parent is disabled and uses a 1099 form not a 1040 or others. Fafsa does not give any options for a 1099 or even ask if the parent is disabled is there anything i can do
A 1099 is a form used to report income TO your parent. The tax payer uses the 1099 to complete a 1040, filling in the amount of income reported on the 1099, any W2 income, plus any income on other 1099’s (interest from a bank account, contractor work) on an income tax form (1040, 1040A, 1040ez)
If your parent does not file a 1040, you’d complete the FAFSA putting the the amount of reportable income FROM the 1099s, but you’d check the box that says they did not file and do not intend to file. You will most likely be selected for verification, and will have to provide a statement of Non-Filer, which you get from the IRS.
Is the disability taxed? Find that out first…my understanding is untaxed disability income is not reported on the FAFSA.
It depends.
Untaxed veterans disability payments received by a parent are reported on FAFSA (94.h.), and untaxed workers’ compensation and other disability payments received by a parent are also reported on FAFSA (94.i.). Untaxed Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income are not reported on FAFSA.
