Yes, I think it is clear that dwnkboy is simply one of our old “friends” under another name. The “common sense” remark is decidedly reminiscent of another poster, especially since it makes no sense at all. He obviously cannot understand that Brown themselves issued a report that acknowledged they had huge grade inflation and were giving out about 50% A’s. He can call facts disparaging if he wants, but as someone once said they are “stubborn things”. Besides, he was the one that brought up the grade inflation claim without a shred of evidence. Knowing that Brown, through its own report, actually has grade inflation, I was simply wondering if he got confused. But certainly his posts have no point at all.

As you say jym, back to topic. My D is pleased with her’s so far also, although she says one is rather quirky. She has one she had before because it is the other half of a history series. Had a surprise with another class where the actual purpose of the class wasn’t what the description made it sound like, and apparently others thought the same thing. But in a nice turn of events, she likes what it actually is at least as well as what she thought.

allwill - sounds like you are off to a great start!

Do Graduate Assistants teach some intro courses at Tulane (not merely labs) as the original poster stated or not?

There has been no confirmation of that one way or the other.

The original poster said it was confirmed in the Tulane online material. FC you have great Tulane connections can you not confirm or deny?

I don’t know the course number or section number involved. I am always glad to help where I can, but since the OP said they were contacting Tulane directly, it would be inappropriate for me to step in further at this point, I think. I m sure we will know within a few days.

If you go to the various courses referenced by original poster and look them up online the original poster is correct that they indicate Graduate Assistants are teaching some of the courses not merely labs. FC I am sure you are able to access the same information.

Perhaps because they had a 10% larger freshman class than anticipated they had to make some temporary changes in the teaching arrangements to be able to provide enough sections and classes. In a funny way this is a nice problem to have, and hopefully will be rectified with increased faculty hiring if the budget allows.

I was looking to see if it was discussed in the Staff advisory council mtgs, but the website hasn’t been updated with minutes from the July meeting http://tulane.edu/sac/meetings.cfm

FC said on post number 4 of this thread that Graduate Assistants did not teach classes only some labs. FC said this was policy as late as last year. Has policy changed?

Sorry I meant as late as this spring.

Who knows. Temporary changes might have had to have been made to accomodate the unexpectedly larger incoming freshman class. Unfortunately the SAC and University Senate meeting minutes are not currently available for review. Why don’t you contact the admissions member on this site, Tulane Jeff?

If freshman are being taught by Graduate Assistants in some classes I assume that is something a prospective student or parent would like to know. Is that what you think is happening jym626?

It is purely conjecture on my part, wsd, and if, as fc said, Pres Cowen plans to aim for a smaller freshman class next year (1400, as he reported in another thread) this is probably a temporary blip on the radar. I have no reason to believe this represents a policy change, but rather a short-term solution to a short-term problem. JMO, FWIW

You know, I gave the best information I had, made an appropriate suggestion that the OP followed, and really thought and still think that was adequate. I do not get paid for this. Just like back in April when you implied I speak FOR Tulane rather than ABOUT Tulane, you seem to have a mistaken notion of my role here. I am sorry that you apparently think I am delinquent because I didn’t care to scan through the course listings and compare it to personnel records. It still really doesn’t tell us more about what is going on than the Dean(s) is/are likely to. Let’s just wait for their answers, the rest is speculation.

I have not attacked you FC. Merely asking questions that may not result in the answers you like is not a personal attack. I assume we can both agree that if Tulane now has Graduate Students teaching intro courses to Freshman that is something every prospective student and parent would like to know.

Is your dau at Tulane, wsd?

No. Why this is relevant to my question is beyond me.

Curious as to why this is of such concern to you.

If I inferred something you didn’t intend, then no problem. The tone of your post implied to me that you accessed the info, so why hadn’t I? LIke I said, just seeing the same info the OP already stated doesn’t advance the issue much.

Anyway, I do agree that if Tulane has shifted its policy in any major way, it should be known. I rather doubt this is the case, but like I said, let’s wait and see what feedback jordydog gets. If that does not clear it up, then perhaps more digging will be needed.

jym626 curious why you post 6,4444 times since 2004.
