It’s the time of year to be grateful and, yet, I am once again annoyed at Kraft and other companies for discontinuing some of my favorite products. I am planning to make broccoli dip in a few weeks for a party and I don’t quite know what to substitute for the discontinued garlic roll of cheese. I used to use the little jar of Kraft Olde English Cheese and add garlic, but that product is also now MIA. Any suggestions? I’m wondering if I could use the Trader Joe’s Unexpected Cheddar spread with garlic powder or garlic salt added.
And while I’m at it, Nabisco discontinued my favorite cooke, Heydays, in the ‘80s and I don’t plan to ever forgive them for that. Granted they were not healthy in the least, but so delicious. Also, still missing Sugar Wafers. Theirs were the best.
Wondering if Heaven will have a buffet of things we miss?
I have a recipe I have always used that Old English spread that came in the little jar (which my mom, when empty, would use as a small drinking glass). I feel like I found it in the last year or two but haven’t looked recently. I think I would use that TJ. Cheese, maybe mix it with a little Cheeze Whiz if that’s still available?
For the garlic cheese roll, could you use one of those new soft cheese people seem to love - Boursin or similar???
I am sad that Droste Cocoa powder went out of business in the spring although a few sites are still listing it; not sure how old those items actually are. I’ve looked a lot online for what people recommend for substitutes - we mainly only use it for hot chocolate, not baking.
Agree about the Nabisco Chocolate Wafers. I used them for the crust for a fabulous chocolate cheesecake. I haven’t found a decent substitute yet…would love to hear about one.
The closest I’ve gotten is taking Oreos apart, and scraping out the filling. The cookie isn’t all that sweet.
My Publix still carries that Kraft Old English cheese but they keep it in a strange place in the store – on the bottom shelf below the Kraft grated parmesan in the green container.
