I am in NYC for the next 4 days. I have a tight budget, so would love to know where to get discount tickets for broadway and also recommendations for which show to watch. I know there’s a ticket office in times square but I hear they don’t have discounts for shows like Wicked or Lion King. Are there other places to get discounts for popular shows like those? I am also open to off broadway shows, if anyone has must see recommendations? I would also like to see the Nutcracker. If you can only see one show, on and off broadway, respectively, which would it be?

Thank you in advance.

Pippin…and you can probably get tickets at the place in Times Square for that.

Mama Mia is fun (is it still playing), and so is Jersey Boys (is that still there?).

You can see what shows have recently been on TKTS at that link.

You can also order discounted tickets at broadwaybox.com or playbill.com.

Current shows I’d recommend:

off-Broadway - Avenue Q
Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812

Broadway - Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
Kinky Boots
Motown: The Musical
Once

The schedule this week.

Try Playbill.com or Broadwaybox.com for discounts, too. I usually find what I want there.

If I’m not too late to join in, or for anyone else looking for discounted Broadway/off-Broadway tickets, 2 of my favorite sites are Goldstar.com (look in the NY section - as an example, right now they have tickets for Avenue Q for 1/2price) and as part if the Theater Development Fund, they offer Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway tickets for $9. This is an amazing way to see some decent shows without breaking the bank. A few years ago I went with a friend to visit my D in NYC for a week and we saw a show a day. Some were outstanding, some just ok, but for the price, we couldn’t beat it.

Most of the theaters have last-minute tickets (called “rush” tickets), either by lottery a few hours before the performance or by waiting in line. The only problem is that you have to just be lucky. I think at this late date and since it is a holiday week, your best bet is the TKTS booth in Times Square. There’s also an equivalent booth up at Lincoln Center for the ballet. Good luck!

Almost all the discount ticket offers from places like Broadway.box and Playbill.com will be blacked out for holiday week. Truthfully your best bet will be on line at the TKTS booth however you go with the understanding that there will not be discounted tickets for major hit sold-out shows like Wicked, The Lion King, Kinky Boots and Book of Mormon. You should be able to get discount tickets for shows that either have been around a long time like Mamma Mia or shows that are about to close and didn’t get great reviews like Big Fish.
