How prestigious is this? If you are chosen as a winner, is it worth it to send an update to colleges?

Thanks!

How prestigious is this? If you are chosen as a winner, is it worth it to send an update to colleges?

Thanks!

Just about everyone is picked as a winner. But the one with the actual money is pretty prestigous.

Contrary to what some may believe, fewer than 30% of all applicants are named Discus Award winners.

There are also multiple types of scholarships offered through the program. The National All-Around Student Scholarship is likely the award that you are referring to, ZombieDante. That scholarship is awarded to only ten students each year!

One benefit of including the Discus Award on your application, sunshine02, is that it recognizes qualities that most awards do not recognize; activities that may occur outside of the classroom. In the same way you might list an MVP Award for your community sports team on your application, you may list a Discus Award for your contributions both in and outside the community.

Hope this helps!

how long does it take to be notified?

I know this post is a year old but,

I just got notified that I was awarded as being a National Scholarship Finalist, and Discus Awards Finalist. Would it be worth it to tell this to the admissions of the schools that I already applied to?

I was just informed on Saturday 1/12 that I am a Discus Awards Finalist, and they said I’d hear news later about the scholarship.
How long does this news usually take?

@cboback567 Congratulations! It definitely can’t hurt to notify the schools you applied to, at the very least it gives you an excuse to contact them As far as the scholarships go, if you receive a scholarship through the Discus Awards program, the school you attend will be notified through the scholarship administration process. You’ll receive details about that process if you are selected as a scholarship winner.

@fjghas Congrats to you, too! Multiple scholarships are awarded through the Discus Awards program. One scholarship winner was even announced today! Check out this College Confidential thread where I post the National All-Around Student Scholarship winners for more information: [National All-Around Student Scholarship Thread](<a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/other-major-scholarships-competitions/1283417-national-all-around-student-scholarship.html"]National”>National All-Around Student Scholarship - Other Major Scholarships and Competitions - College Confidential Forums). As for the notification process, scholarship winners are notified by email when they have been selected the Discus Awards judging panel. NAAS Scholarships are awarded on January 31st and June 30th, respectively, every year. Other scholarships awarded through the program may have different award schedules.

Hope this helps, folks!
