Yeah I kinda did say it boosts my grades so… My school weights IB and AP differently because IB is a program (all IB classes) and our workload is way more than AP’s.

But I know a Gates Mill. Scholar and he told me that they like when you are recommended by people with a title cuz thats what he did. So I asked the director of my program to recommend me and another person with a big title to nominate me.

i have start of the semester tests. so far i’m starting off the semester failing all of my classes because of my awful test grades. wonddddderful good luck to you though!!!

RE: AP and IB. They both indicate rigor in your classes. Whether you get a 1.0, 1.5, or whatever grade boost doesn’t really matter, as every school weights differently. UW is a much better guage for your GPA. A high GPA is great, but for this scholarship, it is definitely NOT the only or even the main criteria that they are looking for.

You should have used two different teachers/mentors/community leaders/counselors etc. for your nominator and recommender. Using one is not what they asked for, and would be redundant.

jtm2292, 1000 students receive the GMS each year.

To the rest of you, 3.3 is the minimum GPA for a Gates Scholar. Don’t be fixated on your GPA/stats. They REALLY are interested in you leadership, community involvement and EC’s. You may have a 4.0/2300 and not get the scholarship, yet a 3.5/2100 with outstanding other qualities will.

How is asking the same person for both redundant? They ask the nominator and the recommender entirely different questions.

In the FAQ it says:
Who qualifies as a Recommender?
Recommenders can be any adult who is familiar with the Nominee’s community service and leadership activities, such as supervisor at work or a community leader. If the person who serves as a Nominator is also familiar with the student’s non-academic activities, he or she may serve as a Recommender as well.

Sorry, they must have changed in the last couple of years. It sounds as if they could both be the same, but IMO, having two different people giving you a rec would be better.

Hey guys. Asking one person to fill both papers out isn’t bad. I had a friend last year that had our counselor do that and she won the Gates and is at Brown now (just to throw that out). I had her do the same for me.

I’ve seen the statistics and someone has a better chance of getting admitted to an ivy league school. 1000 people are awarded the scholarship and about 60000 apply
