^ according to college board it’s an 87. I’m think I’m starting to freak out. We’ll see if I’m still freaking out tomorrow when I find out my unweighed/weighed GPA.

How do your school deal with AP classes? What’s added to your GPA?

I think Gates pays for a laptop if the shows includes it in its cost of attendance. If not, I don’t believe they pay for it.
Not sure about the personal expenses though. There’s something about rebate check here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/gates-millennium-scholarship/635349-gates-millennium-scholarship-2009-2010-a-70.html

so i called the number and it said that the letter is in the mail, but nothing about these documents…so pretty much that means i’m not a finalist right ?

@smile2day, thats what people are concluding, because those who received an email called and got the 0-5 response. We cant assume that 100% there is still hope for you.

k thanks 2010 here.
i saw in an earlier post you said you’re going to unc. me too :))) --just a little side note hahah :)

Congrats to all finalists! And those who weren’t, chin up! :)

I was selected as a finalist, but I do not plan on persuing this. Mainly because since I first filled out the application, I have decided to join the Air Force and even though I was already accepted at Valdosta State, I’m currently in the process of signing over to the military…

Good luck Maria, with whatever you choose to do.

It looks like I’m alright w/ the GPA 3.3

i might end up at unc too!, and im hoping to be a carolina covenant scholar.

is that the work-study program?, seems pretty awesome.

What happens if you are selected as a scholar and you aren’t pell grant eligible next year? Do they continue to check eligibility or once you get it, do you get to keep it?

Q: Does being a finalist mean that you will get the scholarship? From the information below, it most certainly does not. Here’s a piece of information contained in an extra email (that followed from the email informing you of finalist status) that Gates sent:

I am a finalist, does this mean I will receive the scholarship?

No. You have advanced to the second phase of the screening and selection process. Once we receive the requested documents, we will determine your eligibility. Nominees who meet the eligibility criteria are then assessed by academic achievement, community service, leadership potential, and verification of your overall record. In late April, you will be mailed a letter advising you of your GMS status.

Strange indeed. Normally, you’d think that they had already assessed all of the above criteria in order to even classify you as a Finalist in the first place. Maybe they’re comparing you to a more robust, competitive pool? (aka comparing you to other Finalists instead of the “whole pool” of applicants).

^ I never received that e-mail.

Yes, i just received my letter in the mail yesterday, I am completely excited to be one of the finalist from Baltimore, Maryland. Question: How many finalist last year actaully became a Gates Scholar? Does being a finalist increase an individuals chance of being awarded with the scholarship?

last year, there were finalists who did not become scholars. I do not know the actual numbers, but from what I know I can infer that sending in the financial aid documents will weed out those who are ineligible, then comparing whoever is left over until they have 1000 scholars.

yea i received my letter, and KIEGO is right. Finalists, I hate to say this but our journey to winning this scholarship is not over yet. So everyone that believes that they will automatically win this scholarship (including people who know they are 100% eligible) take a look at kiego’s post. After they confirm our eligbilty, they are still judging us in a pool of other finalists based on academic achievements, comm. service, etc. So as of now make sure you turn in your stuff and after that, wait (patience is a virtue), and if you are religious, pray to God for you to be blessed with this great scholarship that could possibly be in your hands :-)—bishop5 its ok to be excited but just send in your stuff and try not to think about it until april comes around, sometimes that helps so that it wont seem like Gates is taking forever to send in your final confirmation as scholar.

—peace

I am a finalist!!!
haha hey guys! im sorry!

hey was anybody else called by the foundation today? I wasn’t home so I missed their call and when I called back I had to leave a message. I really want to know why they called! I already know that I am a finalist so that is not it…

^^^^^
Aya, they will have someone to call you to ask if you have any questions about anything. This will be a good opportunity for ALL of you who have questions to write them down so when they call you you won’t draw a blank.

Somebody upthread asked about qualifying each year for the scholarship…yes, you do have to submit your financial info each year to renew the scholarship.

I received a call today. I’m calling back right now.
