Discussions Gates Millenium Scholarship - 2010-2011

Just got the finalist letter today but,
i never got an e-mail. : o

i called in before getting the letter and had heard the “0-5” message.
I’m Hispanic by the way and good luck and congrats to everyone!!

im going to unc chapel hill :/

Do you think they have chossen all the finalist yet

Don’t worry, I was just giving an example. This obviously isn’t always the situation since some scholars go to community college before a 4 year school.

I stated earlier in this thread that I thought school choice was not a factor. I remember that one student (either last year or 2 years ago) had called Gates and asked whether they were bound to attend the school that they sent in the acceptance for, and they were told just to send in ANY acceptance, and that they could change it later. Another reason I don’t think school choice is a huge factor is that Gates only puts out $1800 per year for my daughter, not exactly breaking the GMSP bank! I’m sure there were students with more need than that. Given the emphasis that Gates puts on EC’s, leadership, etc., I would think that would be more of a factor than anything. Just speculating of course. :)

so ga2012mom, have you ever had to pay a DIME for your child’s education? I really dont want my parents to worry about paying a single dollar for my education, thats y i have been stacking on these scholarships lol

^^^^^^

No, the combination of being a QB match and a Gates Scholar covers everything. D does work during summers as well.

Here is the quote I’m referring to:

@GA2012MOM
Yeah, I’m not sure if all my info was correct. Thus my disclaimer at the end of my original post, haha.
All I know is, my friend said that there were finalists from NYU and Johns Hopkins. NYU gives very little aid, JH a lot; A lot of NYU people got in, JH kids didn’t. But I don’t know if this really correlates with acceptances or not, just throwing it out there. "

…Like I said, we don’t know this for sure.

@GA2012MOM
I agree with you. It makes more sense that they would put more emphasis on EC’s, leadership, etc. than school choice.

well have has anyone received that gpa form? is it safe to just mail in what you have? and do the transcript/profile later?

what’s the numerical value of a 3.3? (ex. cummulative avg. of 90?)

Just got an e-mail 7:03 pm saying I’m a finalist. YAYYYYYYYY!!! I’m hispanic from the northeast. This is amazing! Congrats everyone and good luck.

GREAT!!! Received a letter in the mail today from GMSP. Thankyou for applying… bla bla bla… unfortunately due to the high number of applicants you were not selected to be part of the GMSP Finalists. bla bla blah! Grr. so sad… Live in LA, Cali.

I’m still waiting on my letter or an e-mail. Live in Missouri and I’m Hispanic.

I got my email about being a finalist :slight_smile: at 6:01pm central time. (Hispanic)

Congratulations to all the finalists, i just got my letter today by mail saying I’m a finalist. =] Hispanic from Arizona… keep the fingers crossed && Congrats! =]

So what exactly does Gates pay for besides tuition and room/board? Does is pay for a laptop? Does it give you a personal allowance/living expenses type thing?

So…I’m a finalist and was wondering if a lot of people become finalists or what?

Because I seriously didn’t think I’d get past the first cut offs. I mean, I wrote about having an extra toe at some point.

So is this “oh, hey, you weren’t terrible?” or is it closer to actually getting it?

God, I’d cry of joy and faint if I were to get this.
