Okay good. That’s what I was looking for.

Whoa, why’d they pick so many more? Now I’m a bit nervous. Last year it was around 1,900 finalists. I’m hammering out my Jackie Robinson Scholars app just in case.

@shyman: Where did you get this info? I’ve never heard of them actually saying how many finalists they accept before, I thought they usually never tell that kind of thing.

I sent all my stuff in on Thursday, mainly because I didn’t want to fax some 15 pages of information and it said fax OR mail on the letter. That should be fine right? I mean, I hear of all these people faxing, but it shouldn’t make too big of a difference, right? It’s still way before the deadline.

And, I am confused about the April thing. I’d always heard that they notify in mid-April, and when I checked last year’s forum, everyone seemed to get their letters on April 15. But, the email/letter we finalists got said LATE April (well that’s ambiguous). And I know that GA2012MOM said that it was on a rolling basis, some scholars got their letters before her D. So which way do you guys think it’ll be this year–everyone getting a letter on one day, or everybody getting letters on different days? The latter way would be so nerve-wracking…

I’m guessing April 15th for sure this year. Last year was April 16th.

I went back to the thread from 2 years ago, and the first scholar got their packet on 3-26, and my daughter didn’t get hers till 4-9. Who knows what the timeline will be this year, but I am just putting this out there so everybody doesn’t completely panic if they are all not in your mailboxes on the same day. :)

Does anybody know if the GMS covers pharmacy school?

I’ve seen this question asked in threads from previous years, but I haven’t seen a definite answer.

Thanks in advance for answering my question.

^^^^^^
From the Gates website, regarding choice of major.

“No, during the student’s undergraduate career there are no restrictions on the major field of study a student selects. Continuing Gates Scholars may request a fellowship for a graduate degree program in one of the following discipline areas: Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Library Science, Mathematics,. Public Health or Science.”

So the answer is no to pharmacy.

Lol okay I have another question. What is everyone going to do about the college acceptance letter. I already got into my safety school, a public university, but my top choice is a private. Should I send everything now or just wait for an acceptance letter for a private and expensive university?

^ Many in the past (threads) have said to send in any college acceptance.

I think you should send in what you have. I think the only reason they’re asking for a copy is because they’re making sure that you’ve actually gotten accepted somewhere.

Stupid question, but their fax machine is on all night right (sunday/sat/m/t/w/t/f)?

See post #617, or better yet, read your finalist letter from Gates! :)

Send what you have!

yea shyman, where are you getting this info. from? i was told the number of finalists is pretty close to the number of potential scholars. " 90% of finalists techincally are awarded the scholarship if every thing is passed eligibility"—2009 Gates scholar that contacted me through facebook. so i dnt know where you got 3000, so let me know. but i’m not saying people should get their hopes up, i’m just delivering you the message that was sent.

okay, thanks for your help guys I just decided to send in everything on Monday. Also about the number for finalists becoming gates scholars, how would a millenium scholar know the number of finalists? Do they release that sort of thing later?

they are ambassadors and they get trained to do so. so some of them know alot of information

I sent the information to the adress given on the letters they sent. The HSF is located on Second in California. I don’t know it off the top of my head. I’m pretty anxious. I was told Wednesday & I mailed the papers on Friday. I’m so NERVOUS. So 90% of finalists are actual receipients. So can someone explain to me. The second round is based on: finances alone?

The address (decided to check for Hispanics) is 55 Second Street Suite 1500 San Francisco, California 94105 :)

My son was and is a Gates scholar. He is working on a masters right now. When he got the finalist letter, I had no idea about what would happen. It came late and was sent by what I call “fancy mail.” I have always thought to make it to finalist, you need to show that you have the grades & interest and the need to continue. I may be wrong. But I don’t think so. Hang on. Good luck. What a wonderful organization! What a wonderful opportunity. And to be honest, I think my boy will do his country proud. :)That is what it is all about.

To add insult to injury, I just reread my rejection letter and it said “Ms.” Christopher Kelly. >:( Sigh…
