Discussions Gates Millenium Scholarship - 2010-2011

WOW! andrea… great scores and stuff… wow… i wish i had a 31 ACT… but they dont look for ur ACT scores do they?

Yeah this isn’t College Confidential or something…oh god…

They better look at ACT’s. I only took ACTs. Juxtaposed to Andrea, she’ll be picked over me. I’m just a great writer.

Don’t even worry. We’ll find out in about a month. Rest til then.

Another thought: MOST people who qualify for Pell Grant and have the GPA get it, for sure. I wouldn’t worry about chances or any of that for the time being. You have a good 14 days until college decisions come out and you’ll be hearing from the colleges of your dreams. Gates is largely in the bag now. There’s nothing you can do about that one. And the same with college acceptances. So the best thing is to just take it easy and take these next few days without blowing up from stress, and good luck will soon be had!

“have the GPA”. What’s the GPA they want?

The don’t care about test scores right?

That can’t be true. Jenny and Gina (both Asian) applied from Palo Duro HS. Gina is a Gates Scholar while Jenny is not. Jenny was ranked #1 of her class while Gina was ranked #15. Do not believe it relies on GPA. EFC on both weren’t 0’s, either. I’m lost and nervous. Obstinate. HOW ARE YOU SO CALM!?

I only applied to Baylor. I’ll be out around 20,000 for the first year unless I just don’t go to college. My education Is in the hands of Gates. Uhhhhh. :((((

3.3 GPA, Pell Grant eligible. Those are the qualifications. If you have those, you’re fine. If not, then it very well be a problem.

I mean if you think about it, at this point, they’re just making sure everything you put on your app is the truth. So, a few eligible people may not make it. The chances are very, very strong that that person will not be you.

Jrueda, you have at least a 3.3 GPA correct? And your EFC is below like 4500? Then chances are very strong that you have nothing to worry about, my friend :).

I suppose I’m not worrying because I have other things to worry about that have occupied my time, and have made this past year just fly by. Plus, there’s the whole April 1st private college Armageddon thing. That kind of freaks me out.

I was rejected. I wrote about 500 words for each question they ask. Now I am not sure if that is a good idea to go too deep in your application.

My essays ranged from a full page to three pages long. 500 words seem somewhat short.

Yes I do and I have a 0 EFC. I’m just nervous. Period. I’ll just worry about the research papers I have due.

Yeah, the #1 and # 10ish weren’t finalists. I’m the only one from my school and I’m just about #30. My essays were, eh. Like…I wrote about having an extra toe so I don’t know, they were honest and I’m not a great writer, not a ton of SAT words in it, just honest in them. Like, no bragging but just real experiences and such, and nothing terribly tragic either. Maybe they can tell the honest essays from the lie kind or something.

Ah, obst. you make me happy with the “just checking eligibility” because I am! But, god, it feels like it shouldn’t be this easy.

I think the longest any of my essay were is about 900 words.

Did I write too much? Well I’m ranked 23. The other Hispanic girl at my schools rank is better then mine. But oh well. I guess I shall wait it out and see how God will lead me.

I feel as though I’m kind of late in the game (joining this forum now), but I honestly thought that I wouldn’t be a finalist…so I found it pointless to research the scholarship itself. I only applied for the scholarship because my guidance counselor forced me to do so, (that among other teachers), and here I am. Well, I know that only two students from my school were declared to be finalists. The valedictorian and salutatorian (myself), but the Val doesn’t qualify for the Pell Grant, and my EFC is pretty high up there too.

But then again, my father makes $58,000 and there are seven people living in my household. Not to mention, my first choice is the University of Miami, which is well over $58,000 a year (it’s a private university), and they are only giving me $35,000 for this year. I refuse to get my hopes up…but if I actually got this scholarship…it would be like…wow… I just thought I would share my story :).

Anyway, I was reading that Gates pays for graduate school in the area of science and Public Health, what exactly is Public Health (I know it sounds like a dumb question, but I tend to ask many of those)? Also, Gates doesn’t pay for either medical or nursing school?

Heyyy Im the only one from my school that applied. My school doesnt rank but I think I might be like #5. Some of my essays were really great, straight from the heart. But I waited last minute for some of the last ones so they werent as impressive. I just really hope i get it that way I dont just have to depend on financial aid from colleges. My EFC is 0 also. Has anyone received any phone calls from gates?

Yes. Many of us. We received calls because the GMS Representatives want to make sure we get all of our stuff turned in by the deadline.

The last time I received a call, was when they called me to tell me that I was a finalist, because I never actually received an email or a letter, so they basically had to resend all my information (I think it’s a conspiracy).

I think about ten students from my high school applied to the Gates Millennium Scholarship, but I’m not sure on how many students were actually finalists.
