Discussions Gates Millenium Scholarship - 2010-2011

I…um, had no doubts at all about them being able to fund all 1000 or them checking test scores. I’m a little curious on how many finalists/the1000picked ratio. But really, this waiting game is soooo much fun.

j/k need to get my CAS hours and everything done with school

Don’t you just love IB…I am desperately trying to balance working on my French oral (which is tomorrow), TOK presentation on Thursday (I wish I knew how to classify knowledge issue is =p), and trying to finish my IB Chem lab also due thursday…fun how everything gets mailed off next monday =(

You guys stress a lot. I do. Haha. Well yah. I’m still curious about the finalist to scholar ratio. :P

Ew IB. I hated doing my TOK presentation and I did my Spanish Oral last year too. Good luck Ttcaptur and lucky2010. The cas stuff is really straight forward, it’s just doing it that’s the hassle

but I have a question, so I called the 877 number and it told me that a letter was sent out and that i should have recieved it. I haven’t gotten it yet, but does that mean that I am not a finalist? It didn’t tell me about the 0/5 recieved documents thing or anything like that.

Im sorry. But I don’t believe you made it of it didn’t tell you about the 5 documents.

Yeah, that might be it. My friend got a rejection letter over last week. I did all my orals and junk, just need CAS and the tests in May. After that it’s just straight chilling in school.

haha. Straight chilling. :stuck_out_tongue: I get to take my AP calculUs test in a few weeks.

I did not like that test. It was annoying and I failed and felt unprepared because IB bio teacher was telling the calculus teacher to teach us statistic deviation for this experiment and it screwed up the studying for AP test part. Good luck! Hope you do better than I did!

A.P Calc wasn’t that bad D: I hate maths though (and yes, I did say MATHS…plural :D)

-_-
I hear from Duke on Monday!

I love my calculus class, it’s so AWESOME. Haha! (: Thanks for the luck. Hah. I’m nervous. I really hate timed tests to begin with. :/

Woot! Duke. Good luck! :)

My SAR wouldn’t fax correctly, so I had to mail it. 4/5. Grrr…

I’m curious if going to a school that meets 100% of need decreases my chances of getting the scholarship? There would still be a few thousand in student contribution and work study that I would have to pay. I was debating on whether or not to send in my Stanford letter, but I decided that’s where I will most likely end up.

Don’t worry about it. My D was a Gates Scholar and she sent in a letter from a school that met 100% of need, and they also knew she was a QB match.

Hey, ya’ll, um…I put down Carnegie Mellon as my school when first applying. I sent the UT acceptance letter first off because it’s the first one I got. So now I’m in to CMU, should I also send over that acceptance letter?

Also, does this thing cover the enrollment fee due May 1st? I mean, it’s usually 100s of dollars.

Nevermind that, but when’s the day we find out again?

They never said a specific day that we get notified. Last year, it was April 16. I think in many past years (but I can’t remember for sure) it’s been mid-April. This year, though, the bottom of the letter they mailed us said “Late April.” It’s all really ambiguous.

Duke: Denied.

^ ouch.

Yeah, I called earlier and they were like “You’ll know by May 1st” and I was like “I’ll have to make a deposit by then!” What if school A is my dream but doesn’t offer enough money, so I go to B but then get the Gates? Or if I select school A but don’t get it and am screwed? Argh.

@lucky2010 Yeah, I was kind of in shock because I had gotten into some places on par with (or above) Duke’s standards, but I wish they would put a big fat red “NO,” instead of going on and on about my qualities and the difficulties in selection of applications…etc. I think they only accepted like 6.41% of applicants this year? Roughly 1700 out of 26,500 (this may have been just ED applicants).

Anyway, I wish they would just say yes or no and move on, thanks Christoph Guttentag (director of Admissions). Rejection hurts, but I guess it just means there is something out there better for me.

&& I’m in the same situation as you with the whole May 1st thing. Le sighhhh. Good luck everyone!

Okay now that I got my award reports I need to start figuring this stuff out. I know this question has been asked quite a few times but what’s one more? So if I have a total responsibility of say 5000, Gates will cover that right? But then don’t schools take into account the fact that you’re getting a Gates scholarship and then decrease the amount of funding they give you in grants? So really, you’ll end up having to pay the same amount? And then also, say I have a Federal Work Study plan of 3000 each year. Does Gates cover that too? or do I still have to do work study?

Also aside from Gates even, what if the amount of scholarships you accumulate surpasses the expenses for attending the school? Do you just get a fat check or something?

Oh good lord I am bewildered. o.o
