Dishwasher Purchasing Advice

" dishes only need scraping not rinsing but my kids and dh can’t seem to get in that habit."

That’s so funny. I’ve rinsed dishes forever and then just questioned in past week “Why am I DOING this?!”
We have a fairly new KitchenAid and I said–Forget it! I need to test this sucker out! And lo and behold–I’ve put pots and pans in with stuff stuck and cooked on to them and they came out clean as a whistle. Eye opener!
Now it all goes in with just a scraping (unless I only got a couple things and not running washer).

Very quiet but has a 4-hour delay button so it can run after you’ve retired to bed.
I bought it because it was only one that had a good set-up to load a ton of dishes easily.

We don’t have the third rack. I debated it but decided it probably wasn’t worth the money or hassle. Never miss it.

@gouf78, how often do you run your dishwasher? I am a “clean before putting in dishwasher” person, but we sometimes go 3 or 4 days before we run it.

With my 20 year old KitchenAid, we’ve never had to rinse until the past year or so. With a good dishwasher, I don’t think you need to. And thing definitely sit as we only run it every 3 days or so unless the kids are home or we have company. I always handwash pots though.

I have had wonderful experience with Bosch. I have a 13 year old one that has been fabulously reliable. I just had my first repair this past summer. I have 2 of them in my 3 year old house and they are also great. I do agree that the new rack configurations aren’t as flexible as the older style but I’m learning a new way to load. I can’t get as much loaded into the newer models but everything comes out clean and it’s so, so quiet. I do not like the top utensil tray at all so have removed both which gave me more height for wine glasses.

My choice 3 years ago was between Bosch and Miele. I took a bunch of my dishes to the Miele experience center in Princeton and played with loading the dishwasher. I didn’t find it any easier to load than the Bosch.

1214mom–I’ve only recently started experimenting. There is a “rinse only” feature which I’ve never tried (stupid me). I’ll report back on how well that works!

I’ve always handwashed pots too. And then I had some pans that just had too much cooked on stuff and I said “what the heck! Can’t be any worse!” and they came out great. Not sure if it’s the washer, the detergent or a combo.
But happy.

I love the 3rd drawer n my Bosch. I would probably be happy with a KA too. Since I have my run mine 1x a week, I do pre rinse.

Miele, Miele !! You won’t regret it! Have mine for 16 years and everything comes out so sparkling clean without having to rinse.
Among the 15 members of my book club at least half of us have Mieles and think that is the best appliance in the whole house. One member bought two new houses recently (one a vacation home) and she ripped out the brand new DWs and replaced with Miele.
I bought a 18" Bosch for my pieds-à-terre because the Miele 18" is just too expensive. How I miss the 3rd utensil rack!!

For those with brand recommendations, is there a specific model you recommend if you have purchased in the past couple of years?

Another NO for Bosch. Quiet but developed a leak just after it was out of warranty. Large repair bill. Never cleaned the dishes very well and the cycle took forever. :frowning:

We just went back to a basic Sears model (too lazy to go see which brand). It’s noisier than the Bosch but the dishes get clean!!

Really, really good review of top Miele picks. We got the clean touch ss Futura. I like that the front stays smudge-free.

Don’t get a Whirlpool. I researched (CC-level research!!) & bought this model - WDF730PAYM3 - and the motor was dead in a year. And it wouldn’t drain for that entire year; what a piece of junk., after three service calls we just cut our losses.

They’re mostly all junk now. Bear in mind that lots of brands are just names and owned by the same few companies behind the scenes.

I swore off American stuff after that disaster. We got an LG to replace the Whirlpool; that was three years ago, and it’s been perfection.

We’ve had two Bosch dishwashers. Though we liked the way it cleaned, we use a lot of bowls and the racks are terrible for bowls. We recently bought a Kitchen Aid and love it.

Bosch 500 or 800 series. Buy from a reputable appliance dealer and not a big box store.

I’m in the market too and we’re getting a Kitchenaid. Also getting a Kitchenaid refrigerator. It’s all a leap of faith, isn’t it? The model I plan on ordering is KDTM354ESS. It’s currently on sale for $899 at Best Buy and Lowes. Lowes until 1/24, I’m not sure about Best Buy. (MSRP is $1199)

If you plan to install your own… One thing many homeowners do not get to see is the “other side of the medal.” Meaning everything that is not visible to the kitchen owner’s eye but oh so visible to the installer.

Miele: the soundproofing insulation around the body of the DW is neatly tucked under some cover material, no sharp edges, and all parts needed for the install were included. Other brands… not so much. Be ready to get a DW install kit (tubing and electrical cord) if you buy domestic.

Mr. B now can brag that he installed 6 dishwashers. In 4 different houses.

I’m amused that everyone here talks about brands as if one brand is good and another brand is inferior. That isn’t how it works. Any company that puts their name on a dishwasher will have good and bad models (except Frigidaire, which are all crap), some with great features and others you wouldn’t put in a rental. If it were me I’d first look the decibel level and choose a quiet one, correction, a very quiet one, and I’d insist on a stainless steel tub.

Point of personal preference, I like those that have the controls on the top edge of the door so that you don’t see knobs, buttons, or lights on the face.

Had a GE Profile that was fine til motherboard went out after 7 years. About as I expected though. Bought a Whirlpool that motor leaked after a little over a year, damaging our wooden floors. Replacement motor leaked also upon initial install testing. Complete crap, which is why Whirlpool has to resort to lobbying for tariffs rather than making a decent product.

KitchenAid KDFE104DSS. Mine has the controls outside (I like to see what it’s up to). Works great and good rack configuration.
Just saw a KA on-line with a window. Why would anyone want a window in their dishwasher? With a light no less!

I guess everybody has their favorites. I bought a new Whirlpool a few months ago that is exceptionally quiet (I would forget it’s running except for the little blue light). Stainless interior, cleans great without rinsing dishes. I have had nothing but Whirlpools and have never had a reliability problem. We have friends that have a family appliance service business since the 60’s. We always go to them first before a purchase: Whirlpool first, KitchenAid, a distant third is Bosch. Their advice: Never get a Samsung or LG. Unlike their electronics, appliance reliability is not great, they are difficult to service, and parts can be difficult to get. However, they also told us not to expect even the best of machines to last as long as the “old days.” There will always be lemons too. Good luck!
