Displaying family photos

Before we moved to our downsized townhome, I had pictures of the family in frames around the house. We had a wall of built in shelves in the family room, so most pictures were there, but others were on the fireplace mantel in both the family room and kitchen, as well as some countertops and side tables. When we moved here, there are no shelves, and the limited counter space we have in the kitchen doesn’t have room for frames, so all my photos are still in boxes.

I don’t know why, but I have never liked the look of photos on the walls leading up the stairs; it is fine at other’s homes, but I don’t want to display pictures on the stairs. Now with the grandkids, I would like to have their photos out, as well as some of my older ones. On our main living area, I have very little wall space left after hanging our artwork. It has gotten to the point where I am considering installing built in shelves on the tv wall; a couple of people with the same floor plan have this. Or, I have two tables that have decorative items them, which I could remove and replace with a bunch of frames photos; I could place a good many staggered. Actually, not that I think about it, that might be the best solutions.

Are there any creative ways to display photos?

I’m a less is more person. I DO like some family photos - but I don’t like to overdo it.

I am also not a pictures going up the stairs person. We have built in bookshelves with a big picture window and window seat in the middle - the shelves are where I have some photos but not an over abundance.

Do you have room for a freestanding bookshelf type unit that could be used specifically for this purpose? Would take the place of the built in shelves you used to have? Depending on your style there are lots of options out there - could even be open shelved units.

How about scanning your photos and making a coffee table sized photo book?

Can you put some photos in your bedroom on a dresser?

We have a cluster of family photos on a stairwell landing (I don’t like them going up the walls either but the landing is a nice place for them.)

If you have a piano, that’s also a good spot to display photos.

I’m not sure from your post how much wall space you have but have you considered ledges? I’m currently working on putting up two 8 foot long ledges on an empty wall in our dining room to display family pictures including lots of pictures of our three kids (ages 16 to 22) I don’t like a lot of clutter or having things out, and this is so tidy! Also you can rearrange and add to the “collection.”
You could try googling or searching on Pinterest for gallery wall with ledges to get an idea of this approach.
Sounds like a fun project!

Agree, I’m not a fan of photos on the wall by the staircase. I have a table/desk in our sunroom with family photos – I update/replace some on occasion so I don’t have too many out.

I put 12 Mixtiles (photos on canvas) on a small wall in my great room area. I also have some in one of the guest rooms.

We have photos everywhere. Terribly kitschy but I don’t care.

my parents have an electric photo/picture frame . I load pictures in there every few years and it rotates the photos. you could get yours scanned and have them constantly showing. its fun !

Yes, just about to make the same recommendation. I got my parents an electronic frame and loaded it with photos for their 60th anniversary. Especially as they downsized, it was very handy and compact. Of course you could do a variety of photo displays, but the electronic frame can be updated as needed, and your grandchildren might enjoy it.

You could have several different electronic frames with each having a different series of photos—one set of travels, one of family, and one of misc.

I thought about an electronic frame as my aunt has one. We have enough electronics out, and the grandkids pictures are on every device, including our Apple watches! This is why we haven’t been in a hurry to put pictures back out, but there are times I just want to see a special photo as I walk by. Or, whenever we can have people in our house again, to have a few pics out and about.

The photo book may do what I want without having to stare at a screen. My cousin makes a video and a book each year for her kids birthdays, so has one for each year of their life. I am not creative, but think I could handle picking out my favorite photos and creating a book for the coffee table.

What started this again was it has been a year since dad died and I realized I don’t have a picture of him as they are all in a box. I do have many on my computer from different events, but I had to search for them, and that made me sad as I don’t have earlier ones digital, only the copies in the boxes.
