Div III Safeties

Are your kids contacting the coaches for their safety schools as well as their hoped for schools?

What happens if a student applies to a safety without making clear their interest in playing his/her sport, then later learns s/he might actually have to attend?

Are they likely to be able to walk on to the team?

I think that really depends on the sport. Some sports have very few walk-ons while others have lots of walk-ons. It certainly wouldn’t hurt for the student to contact coaches of her safety schools and let them know she intends to apply.

It can be time consuming to be in correspondence with these coaches and to visit. So I am wondering what happens if the student expresses interest in multiple safety schools but does not really have the bandwidth to cultivate the relationship and visit, etc.

Yes. S1 has been in direct contact with coaches at his safeties.

My daughter only has one safety on the list but stays in regular contact with the coach.

Just last week she emailed her high school coach about a conflict with a high school training session to visit the safety and the reasons why she feels like she needs to keep all options open (since we know there are likely more conflicts in the future). Luckily, high school coach was very supportive about her continued work to ensure she finds the “right” school and quite honestly, she’s leary about risking a walk-on status most anywhere.

I don’t know what sport your referring to, but if visits are not an option, perhaps occassional emails, stats and/or films will help to demonstrate interest.

S had academic, financial, and athletic safety schools and made sure he had coach contact and support at each.

I said yes…but one of S1’s safeties doesn’t even have a football team. They DO have a great club rugby team, however. He hasn’t bothered to communicate with anyone there about club play …but would be happy to walk on knowing he could be a strong contributor.
