Diversion: Do you name the instruments?

Do you, or your son/daughter, name their instruments?

My flutist has had a Lily and a Harry. But my clarinetist never named either of hers…

One of my friends named her viola Bertha! I haven’t named my piano, but I think that’s probably because I’m always performing on someone else’s instrument, so there’s not as much of a personal connection. I named my cello Hector when I got it in 7th grade, but that’s my secondary instrument.

My wife named her very first tenor recorder Lord Alfred (Tenorson).

Son’s String Bass is Elwood (Blues).

My daughter’s oboe is named Ella. None of the other instruments in the house are named.

When D3 was trying out what turned out to be one of her nicest instruments, a 3/4 size french violin with a beautiful golden varnish, she exclaimed rather loudly, “It looks like Pooh!” meaning that the varnish was the same color as Winnie-the-Pooh.

Unfortunately, the sales rep misunderstood her…

That violin was always “Pooh.” None of the other instruments have been named. Including the one who should not be named.

The precious, expensive clarinet in our household has been named Flappy Bob. No one knows why.

The new piano is named “Shirley.” The old piano is named “Karl” (although “Ludwig” is stenciled on the front!).
The saxophone is named “Yanni.”
We have various other instruments but those favorites are the only ones which are named!

Stradmom, my D is wondering if “the instrument that should not be named” is the bagpipes?

My cello is named Sophie. :)

Daughter’s current viola is “London”, the one before that was 'Copper", and the one before that was “Stripes”.

I never named any of my guitars - except for names like, “The Gibson” “The Strat” or “The Taylor”.

My daughter however, has named both of her trombones. The old marching band stalwart was Rufus le Trombone, and the newer Courtois is Armand le Trombone. Armand definitely has that French vibe going for him. Rufus was a workhorse.

My trombones are Baby, Jazzy, and Sir Dante Remington Louis Lafayette (I call him Remi.)

As far as I know, my son’s only named his first acoustic - Aurora.

I love this thread. Wonder what other things they name? lol

well, when my younger daughter was MUCH younger, she created a ball from a roll of masking tape. It had a name… Charlie I think.

I was in hot water for quite a while when I threw him out without asking her permission to do so…

S has quite a few guitars but only named his fender strats. The texas strat- bright red- is named Elmo and the daphne blue is Isabella. The others are all called by their brand names- the Martin or the PRS etc.

My daughter’s first hated Yamaha was always known as “the pea shooter” and she could not wait to get rid of it. I like Remi’s full name - trombonists are always creative about naming their instruments, lol.
