I have already discussed my culture (kind of) in my personal statement and in my why us/why major essay, I talked about my main ecs or rather the topic surrounding my main ecs so for my diversity essay I talked about how my love for music allows for me to appreciate collaboration and diversity. Even though my application has nothing to do with music am I okay or should I start over?
It could be a really interesting topic, it just depends what you do with it and how you use it to respond to the prompt. It’s fine if the rest of your application isn’t music-themed. This just allows you to show another side of who you are.
It sounds perfectly fine.
I like it.
Unique. If it speaks about you, it sounds great.
Sounds fine. No problem at all. There are essay readers available if you need a review.
My second kid’s main college essay was about starting a flag team with her HS band. It had zero to do with her eventual college majors of bioengineering and biology.
I think your essays need to speak to who you are…and it sounds like yours do!
Similarly, my D answered the UC PIQ “Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom” by talking about how much she enjoys studying foreign languages. She applied as an environmental major, who had studied environmental science in high school, so that would have been the obvious choice for such a prompt. Instead, she went with something that had zero connection with her intended major, since she had already talked about her environmental interest elsewhere and wanted to use the PIQ to show another side of herself. It apparently worked because she was accepted.
It must be so refreshing for them to hear about a kid with multiple and diverse interests vs. the far majority they get that are likely totally focused and writing about what they plan to study.
Like all the pre-law doing political science - vs. I don’t know - art history or religion or math.
Yes, which is why the OP might have a good strategy of talking about music for this essay topic. It could potentially add depth to the application as well as some originality.
