How is financial aid calculated in divorce situations? Would a good rule of thumb be to complete the calculators for each school twice (once for mom, once for dad) and then add together the results?

I’m asking the question for a friend with a very high stats student. Thanks.

That is a conservative way of doing it. The fact of the matter is that PROFILE just collects the information for schools and they can use it as they so please. It might be a good idea to call the fin aid offices of some schools and ask.

The financial aid people at my daughter’s college suggested doing exactly what you suggested:

Run a separate FAFSA calculation for each parent, treating the non-custodial parent as if he were the custodial parent for purpose of the calculation.

Add the two parents’ contributions together.

If the college student has income or assets that are also being counted, then be careful not to count he student contribution twice.
