Do a credit check on yourself

So, I got a call from a Certiphi rep today. Certiphi is the company the AAMC uses to do background checks. I was admitted to one of the ten schools participating in the AAMC background check program so they had Certiphi do a background check on me.

On my credit report, a second name came up (same first name as me but a different last name). After doing a criminal record check using both names (my real name and my “alternate” name), it turns out this second name had been busted for domestic battery in 2006. Med schools don’t like domestic battery :(

hey whered you get in if you dont mind my asking

Hm… they don’t check the social security numbers, just the names? Unless you’ve got an SSN clone as well!

I wonder what would happen if your name was something like John Smith or James Brown.

i don’t think people are understanding what norcalguy is saying…it sounds like this is a case of identity theft …good luck clearing your credit…you’ll need it.

There is no reason not to check your credit report at least once a year to make sure everything is in order. You can check it once a year from EACH of the three credit companies.

When I was 17, I had my credit checked. It turned out that I owned a house in Missouri. Now at 20, it’s finally taken care of.

Certiphi had me call the credit check company that they used. After having the lady check my file, she said that there were no second names on my file and she will be mailing me a copy of my credit file. The Certiphi dude was nice enough to not release the report until I fax him a copy of my credit file.

The moral of the story is that, regardless of whether you are applying to med school or not, you should do a credit check on yourself. However, it becomes even more important as you are applying since something like drunk driving or assault and battery would pretty much sink your chances.
