My daughter had orientation this week and talked about a potential math minor with her advisor, because she is coming in with credit for M211 and M212. He said she could replace Finite M118 with a 300-level Linear Algebra class, and then only have to take 2 more 300-level math classes to get the minor. But we are unable to find anything on the IU website that says a 300-level Linear Algebra class can replace Finite M118 for Kelley pre-ICore requirements. Should she just take her advisor’s word for it? How can she get confirmation that this substitution will be allowed? Does anyone have an opinion about this substitution?

What major is your daughter considering (or told the advisor she was majoring in)?

She’s a Kelley direct admit, majoring in management. She needs Finite (M118) for Kelley pre-ICore requirements but she’s also interested in a math minor, so the advisor told her a 300-level Linear Algebra class would meet both the Kelley Finite requirement and give her the 2nd of 4 required classes toward a math minor. Not sure how to confirm this would really work for Kelley (even though the advisor was from Kelley) and not sure if this is recommended.

So based on the I-Core prereqs listed on the bulletin (linked here: [Course and Degree Requirements : Academic Bulletin](<a href=“Indiana University Bloomington”>Indiana University Bloomington)), it should be fine as long as she gets advisor approval, and I’d do this early on first semester. The Bulletin has the summary requirements I’ve listed below for both I-Core and the management major, and it appears that M118 isn’t required for the major…so she should be okay. Like I said, I’d get approval early on first semester in writing (and make sure things carry forward) from her advisor to be safe.

I-Core Prerequisites
Finite Math: MATH-M 118/S118 or approved substitute (3 cr.)
Calculus: MATH-M 119 or approved substitute (3 cr.)

Management Major Requirements: Z340, W430, Z447, J420, J411; 3-6 elective credit hours from D301, D302, W212, W232, W233, Z355, and Z404; 0-3 elective credit hours from L312, L406, F402, M303, P320, G303, and A325.

For a Kelley student to get a math minor, your D with 4/5 in AP Calc BC can take:

M301 or M303, M365 as a substitute for E370, and two more 300/400 level courses.

Thanks soccergurl and ace. Ace, those classes are exactly what the advisor told her, so thx for the confirmation. When she registers for math (probably 2nd semester) she will make sure to get something in writing about M301 or 303 being an approved sub for M118.
